SCHENECTADY Home raid finds weapons, leads to federal charges BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter
A city man is facing federal charges after authorities allegedly found a cache of guns and ammunition during a raid on his Stockade residence this week. Lance Potter, 34, is accused of acquiring the guns unlawfully from out of state because he was previously convicted and imprisoned on a felony charge. Potter was incarcerated after being convicted of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property in September 2001. He served three years in prison, according to state Department of Corrections records. Potter was taken into custody Wednesday following a raid at 220 Green St. Investigators with the FBI and the U.S. Social Security Administration joined state and local police in searching the first-floor apartment. Investigators seized three sawed-off shotguns, a .44-caliber revolver, a .38-caliber revolver and about 1,000 rounds of ammunition. The weapons had obscured or missing serial numbers, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court late Friday afternoon. Potter alledgedly told authorities the weapons and ammunition belonged to him. A clerk at the U.S. Attorney’s Office had no further details about the case late Friday afternoon. Potter had been scheduled to be arraigned in Albany on Thursday afternoon. However, court officials said he became ill and was taken to an area hospital. Potter was lodged at the Albany County Jail Friday pending his arraignment. A court clerk was unsure when he would be arraigned. Potter’s Green Street residence is also listed as a location for the Voice of Truth Ministries. In 2006, Potter received a business certificate for the ministry at the address, according to published reports. Voice of Truth Ministries is also listed as a host site for a discussion about “U.S. policies, government secrecy and potential conspiracies,” according to the website ActivistResource. org. The discussion was last hosted in January 2009. Potter also served time for a burglary conviction in 1997. He was released to the state Division of Parole after serving three years, according to corrections records. Calls placed to a number listed for Potter and the ministry were not returned.
