I thought halfway houses were important and needed? Of course you have nothing but liberal talking point and Z E R O evidence to back that up, as you silence to my challenge indicates. But now that the "party" has ruled against it, you too are against it.

Actually they are needed, and integral in re-introducing ex-cons to society. I learned that in college, where I majored in criminal justice, not liberal talking points.  Community based corrections is the term for it, and it is basically the future of corrections because prisons started overflowing when during the 1960s and 1970s the war on crime saw a sharp lengthening in prison times as crime worsened.

I am still against it and have been since there number of inmates was released (36+ is an aweful lot)and I talked to some parents that have kids at the Carmen little league.  They were concerned because it is right over some train tracks from kids and there is a prevailing rumor/fear that child molesters will be in residence there.

oooh criminal justice books said so. It is an industry, replacing what we used to have: punishment for criminality. Now it is a gigantic government cottage industry.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

Call it whatever you like- but for a person who likes to manipulate budget numbers- it might be time to take a closer look at the cost of punishment-

Every year that an inmate spends in prison costs $25,000- just about the same as a rookie Schenectady cop makes in a year-

An individual sentenced to five years for a $300 theft costs the public more than $125,000.

Electronic monitoring or ' half way' houses cost less than half -

I totally understand why folks are concerned about creating a halfway house in Rotterdam.  And yes the Adult Book Store for weirdos is within reach.  But the bookstore is on CITY property while the halfway house is ours.

I agree w/ Sombody are the stats re: the issue cited.  I don't know of the folks who are trying to implement this.  I would feel much better if it were Fr. Peter Young.  Could it be tied to Young under another name?  It still should work under the same premise as Young's efforts.  Those being released need three things"  housing, jobs and counseling.  The recidivism rate for Young's work is low.

*yawn* - Hey DG, that's old news now. Nice try on the "as it happens" stories.

You're a real cut up MT. The gazette misses a break-in somewhere in Rotterdam and you offer it as evidence the paper sucks. The gazette catches a break-in and you say its because the 'cleaning crew finally learned how to check the fax machine.' The paper writes about something that happened at a meeting 12 hours earlier and you say its 'old news.' If they didn't write about it, you would have blown a gasket.

Reading your fickleness amazes me sometimes. But if there's one thing that's consistent, it's your unwavering hatred for that paper. What the hell did they do to you, kill your puppy or something?

Most people incarcerated 'usually' get their GED, college degree or learn a trade. At least that's what they tell us. So if that is true, this area would be the worst and most discouraging location for jobs (since there are none) and housing (taxes are too high). In my opinion, this location would have been too depressed of an area to 'ease these wo/men' into society.

If any of them had chosen to stay in this area, they would most assuredly end up at the dss building and on section 8, and making a better buck resorting to robbery, selling drugs or prostitution. That is all this area has to offer them. IMHO

Why not propose this half way house in Clifton Park/Malta/Saratoga where there are more jobs and in some cases their taxes are less?

Actually ultra right wingers stopped inmates from getting an education in jail about 5-10 years ago.  Minors in jail have to receive an education just as they would outside of jail.

And the average cost now for an inmate is over $30,000 a year, that as of 2007 (Sheriff Buffardi).

And Bumble you go on and on about how they will be at the DSS building...that's your argument against them going to a halfway house?  So somehow you think less with end up on welfare if they don't go to a halfway house?  Are you bitching about society or presenting a reasonable argument?  While we agree that I don't want the halfway house there, I'm not opposed to the idea of them like you seem to be.  But then again you are a dolt as someone else so eloquently put it.
