Two men were shot Friday night during an altercation on Hamilton Hill. According to police radio transmissions, one man died in an ambulance and the other died in the emergency room at Ellis Hospital; police would not confirm the information from the transmissions. The victims were part of a group that gathered outside in below-freezing weather just before 9 p.m., police spokesman Sgt. Luciano Savoia said. At 9:05 p.m., shots rang out. Neighbors called police immediately and offered to help with the investigation. They offered descriptions and detailed information about two cars, at least one of which police found. Police quickly detained five or six suspects for questioning. Savoia was the first officer on the scene, at the corner of Hulett and Albany streets in Hamilton Hill. He found the men lying on the ground, conscious but in bad shape, each with at least one gunshot wound. Dispatchers put Med-Flight on standby, but both victims went into cardiac arrest. Ambulances were called so paramedics could continue CPR while rushing them to the hospital. Gee, perhaps while the government is passing out condoms and syringes, they could pass out pamphlets on how to shoot at someone without actually killing them. Nearby on Albany Street is the traffic office-unmanned after 5pm. This should be a full time police substation.

The two young men shot dead Friday in a street incident on Hamilton Hill were both from Schenectady, police reported, but few other details were released late Saturday. Sgt. Luciano Savoia said the two men killed were Virgil Terry, 21, and Alphanzo Pittman, 17. Savoia would not release the home addresses of the victims. Police found Terry and Pittman Friday night suffering from bullet wounds shortly after shots were reported at approximately 9:05 p.m. The men were lying on the west and east sides of Hulett Street, near Albany Street. One of the men died in an ambulance and the other died in the emergency room at Ellis Hospital. “I know Mr. Terry appeared to have two bullet wounds, but I’m not sure where [Pittman] was shot or how many times,” Savoia said. Police later reported that Terry was hit one time in the chest and Pittman was hit in the back and leg. The caliber of the weapon was not known, police said, but 9mm casings were found in the street. Neither of the victims were found to have weapons. Friday night Savoia said there was a large group gathering prior to the shooting, according to people in the neighborhood. Savoia said police have not yet confirmed whether the two men knew each other. Daily Gazette archives show Ter- ry was arrested in April 2008 when he was 19. He was being booked for an aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle charge when police said they discovered cocaine on him. He was charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. SCHENECTADY Arrest made in city killing Brother of one of two victims faces charges BY AMEERAH CETAWAYO Gazette Reporter
The brother of one of the victims in the city’s Hulett Street double homicide has been arrested, accused of killing the other man. Dashaun Terry, 19, of Eastern Avenue in Schenectady, faces a charge of second degree murder in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Alphonzo Pittman on March 26. Dashaun Terry is the brother of Virgil Terry, the 21-year-old who was the second victim in the shooting deaths, which prompted meetings on Hamilton Hill to find ways to decrease gun violence. Police reports indicated that Pittman and Virgil Terry were shot on opposite sides of Hulett Street around 9:05 p.m. in the Friday night incident involving a group of men. Pittman was shot in the back and leg while Virgil Terry took a gunshot to the chest. Virgil Terry died on the way to Ellis Hospital and Pittman was later pronounced dead not long after arriving at the hospital. Two sport utility vehicles, one dark and the other white, reportedly fled the scene, police said last month. The investigations continue and police have not released a motive for the shootings. A family member of Virgil Terry previously told The Gazette that he was attending Albany’s Bryant and Stratton College but was caught up in a series of retaliatory fights, for unknown reasons.
