Punching 130 holes through a slate roof isn’t a good way to ensure its longevity. At least that’s what a contractor told the Schenectady County Historical Society when they suggested placing photovoltaic cells atop the soon-to-be constructed George E. Franchere Educational Center at the historic Mabee Farm. The contractor agreed to donate the structure’s slate roof, but told them it would be unwise to drill the holes required to affix the cells. “He said he can’t give a warranty on a slate roof because the panels require 130 holes,” recounted architect Keith Cramer during Tuesday’s Planning Commission meeting. This realization prompted the historical society to revisit plans for the site. Instead of placing the panels on top of the building, they decided to construct a pavilion behind the center and use them as a roof. Cramer said the 1,880-squarefoot pavilion will come in handy for the various functions hosted at the Mabee Farm. What does this have to do with history? Sounds like they just want to make money...
It would be imbecilic to put those SV panels on a slate roof. You place them on roofs that have a similar lifespan, 25 years or so. But what do I know, I am just an idiot small businessman. if they build a "cold roof" pavilion, then yes. Or you can place them on a rotating steel easel that spins with the sunlight...again. I know very little about any of it having researched it for 30 years. I am glad they didn't ask me (not that they would) because they would have disregarded my advice anyway!
