A Capital Region painters union staged an informational picket outside Golub Corp.’s new headquarters on Maxon Road Friday morning over the company’s use of nonunion painters to do fi nish work in the building. Organizer Lee Eck of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, District Council 9, said Golub officials called police, displaying pictures he took on a cellphone. City police and city officials were not available for comment. Picketers started their protest around 6 a.m. and ended it at noon. Golub Corp. spokeswoman Mona Golub said more than 90 percent of the construction workers at the site are unionized, and that the painting was the smallest component of the work. “Given the fact that we have redeveloped a brownfield and built an environmentally friendly, LEEDcertified building and that we will have more than 700 employees occupying that space and hundreds of other business and trade partners will be coming downtown, and that it has increased the tax base, I am surprised that anybody could find a downside here,” she said. Eck said Golub hired Frank J. Ryan & Sons Inc. of Troy, a nonunion painting contractor, for the finish work. Golub is putting the finishing touches on its six-story, 240,000-square-foot headquarters, which cost approximately $30 million to build. The company is relocating approximately 750 employees from the current corporate headquarters in the Rotterdam Industrial Park. The company will demolish the old headquarters to make way for a new warehouse. “They are our biggest competitor. They have taken business from union and non-union businesses,” Eck said. “By being non-union, they can underbid. They do not pay union wages.” Bob Ryan, Ryan & Sons president, said the company pays a competitive wage and that there is no truth to the underbidding statement. “If that were true, we would be the largest painting contractor in business,” he said. The company has been in business since 1940. “We have a fantastic group of employees,” he said. And yes we can find plenty to complain about but it has to do with the phony PILOT and tax reductions handed out by Metrograft. If you want to come in pay full tax assessment like everyone else.
BTW, The rubber stamps on the pathetic City Council are planning to charge landlords-MORE than the absurd new assessments. Anything but budget cuts and salary reductions? You think there is a flood of unsold property just wait.

what they consider union wages other companies call them benefits(sick time/vacation time/health insurance etc),,,,,oh yeah, the unions set a standard and the companies cant afford us or THEM.... and no one can afford their product/service.....I'm all for union work standards....but please the union entitlement standards get shoved down our damn throats day in and day out.......
we shall see if national healthcare is passed....we think we cant afford it now........I'll be the first for a government entitlement nurses/MD union......better get a bigger strap to hold yourself up and me on your back.....

If you are on unemployment, let's say you make $15.00 an hour, and of course, when you are on unemplyment you are ordered by law to take any job that comes along that you are qualitifed for. So, if you get a job making $7.50 an hour, is that a fair wage, even if you can't live on it, because frankly, no one can live on $7.50 an hour except kids living with parents. And that's where, you have places like Walmart which has lots of jobs available generally, but they pay less than adequate wage and really bad benefits. And sadly all those good paying jobs have went to other countries, so unless you have a bachelors or masters degree, you really can't support a family.

it comes down to "I cant afford you and you cant afford me." ....I dont know how we got here but with ATM/debit/credit cards this can be fixed......buttons/zippers/gold/garlic....who cares. valuation is what we put to it.....

Q: What are some of the reasons I could be denied benefits?
A: You must meet the conditions set by law to receive unemployment insurance. You cannot receive unemployment benefits if you have less than the required work and wages to establish a claim. Other circumstances under which your claim cannot be approved are explained below.
Note: If you are disqualified or suspended before beginning a benefit year, you can receive benefits after the suspension or disqualification ends if, at that time, you can meet all the tests for filing a new valid claim.
Voluntary Quit and Misconduct. You will be disqualified from receiving unemployment insurance if:
You quit a job without good cause; or You quit a job due to marriage; or You lost a job because of misconduct; and You have not subsequently worked and earned five times your benefit rate.
A disqualification for the above reasons lasts until you work and earn at least five times your benefit rate. Self employment does not count. You must be out of work again through no fault of your own. In addition, any employment which you lost due to misconduct cannot be used to establish a claim or in the calculation of your benefit rate.
Criminal Misconduct. If you are discharged for committing a felony in connection with employment and admit guilt in writing or you are convicted of the crime, you will be disqualified from receiving benefits for 12 months after discharge from employment. Also, wages paid you for such employment cannot be used to establish a claim for unemployment insurance.
Job Refusal. You will be disqualified from receiving unemployment insurance if, after applying for unemployment insurance, you refuse without good cause to take a job for which you are fitted by training and experience and which pays the prevailing wage for that kind of work in the locality. You may also be disqualified, if, after receiving 13 full weeks of benefits, you refuse without good cause to take a job that you are physically and mentally capable of doing and that pays the prevailing wage for such work and pays at least 80% of your base period high quarter wages.
Strike and Other Industrial Controversy. If you lose your job because of a strike, lockout or other industrial controversy in the establishment where you are employed, your rights to unemployment insurance will be suspended for 49 days beginning with the day after you lost your job or until the labor dispute is ended if it does not last 49 days. This applies whether or not you are directly involved in the labor dispute.
Availability and Capability. If you are not ready, willing and able to work, are not prepared to take a job immediately, or are not physically or mentally capable of employment, you will not be paid benefits until you are satisfying the Department of Labor that you are again available for employment and are capable of working and are making diligent efforts to find a job.
Not Totally Unemployed. If you work while receiving benefits and do not report that employment, even if it is part-time work, you may be committing fraud. You may be suspended from receiving benefits for any day you worked and did not work that work. You may be required to pay back the money you received and a penalty may be assessed for falsely stating you did not work.
