Residents of Rotterdam should no longer expect answers to the questions posed to the town board during privilege of the floor. As of the February 10th meeting, the residents of Rotterdam were informed by the town attorney that during privilege of the floor, though you have the right to ask a question to the board, you should not expect a response from your elected officials.
Residents of Rotterdam need to become involved and continue to check the arrogance of government. The democratic process is never neat and clean, and not everybody is going to be in agreement. If unchecked, those in power will shut the detractors out of the process. Remember - Of the People, For the People, By the People.
An open dialog between Rotterdam's town officials has been a common practice for decades. As it is with most small towns. I find this to be counter productive and slowing the forward progression of Rotterdam. This is how we strengthen our democracy and promote efficiency and effectiveness by making government more transparent, participatory, and collaborative.
An open dialog with town officials allows the residents to submit ideas, discuss and refine others' ideas. It also improves the progression and quality of decision making and encourages participation from the residents.
I am concerned that this change of events will prevent residents from not only bringing their issues to their elected officials, but perhaps not attending at all.
I hope this letter will serve as a reminder to those we elect to represent us, and a motivator to those residents that are unaware of what is going on. Your role in democracy doesn't end after election day. Get involved and have your voice heard.
I suggest that Rotterdam's elected officials reconsider.
Good letter JoAnn, the government at all levels of government don't want to answer questions and I think it's because of the fact that the truth might slip out by accident.
Joann, great letter. It represents the feelings of all those who attended last week's meeting. When the replay hits Channel 16, I hope that the other Rotterdam residents watch closely to witness how the new administration is treating the public. Unfortunately, many voters TRUSTED these candidates and put them in office and now it is apparent that they are not qualified to govern our town.
I urge all Forum readers to spread the word to their Rotterdam neighbors and friends that they need to attend the Town Board meetings and contribute during Privilege of the Floor. It seems like it's always the same speakers and without new faces and voices, we will not be able to get the message across to the Town Board that their time is VERY limited!
They won't print that, you rabble. The editors of the Gazette are like the General Cornwallis in that movie "The Patriot." Did you ever see that? He is arrogant, looks down his nose, calls the locals "uneducated rustics" and "provincials." That is who will judge your letter worthy. When we talk about the editors of the Gazette, we are talking about the most blindly partisan, conservative-hating, arrogant, snobbish, Chardonnay sipping gold-brickers of the first order who never did anything since they got their BA in journalism or English at a state school, all the while wishing they went to Harvard with the Kennedy's. Assholes to the tenth power. Malcolm Provost(bunghole supreme, king of turds), Hume, Clayman, Connor, et al...big gigantic touchholes that want the "educated" class of the government to tell us how inferior and dumb we are on a daily basis, and God forbid we should ever govern ourselves. I can't wait for them to have to try to make a real living someday. You will see Bob Connor as a greeter at Walmart and Judy Patrick at McDonald's really soon.
Coming soon: the demise of their ancient business model. Bank on it. And as they parade about town, poorly dressed in their Sears suits, and $3 ties, I will gladly say to their face "suck me" because that they are all mean mouthed, dirty little chicken shits anyway. And you can quote me. I know just where they are coming from. They are vile and unfair people with axes the size of Sherman tanks to grind. Unbiased- YEAH RIGHT! They fail at fairness like they fail at everything and soon they will all be unemployed as that rag gets flushed into history. I hope they are saving for their early retirements, but I imagine it is hard to save money when you are 50 years old and make nine dollars and hour.
"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
From here on in there should be 'standing room only' at ALL town board meetings!!!
As far as rallying the troops to use their right to free speech during the privilege of the floor.....I predict that if that happens, they, the inadequate and inept town board members aka attorney, will allow only so much time for the privilege of the floor and hand pick their 'speakers'.

I heard that privilege of the floor is not a "requirement" per open meetings law. If the body chooses to allow it, then certain rules and regs. can be imposed.
IF that's true, I wonder if that's what they'll try next!

Couldn't have said that better myself. As the old generation dies off, so will the gazette. They are clearly nothing more than cheerleaders for the liberal socialist democrats! FREE PROPAGANDA!!!

Excellent Letter to the Editor, JoAnn. I hope that the Gazette Editors elect to print it in the spirit of impartialitiy and balanced reporting.
Transparancy, accountability, and openness of government should be demanded by the voters. How can those who are elected to public office to represent their constituents if they don't listen to and respond to their questions and concerns?

Here's one: Yesterday I was at Town Hall when I ran into the new Town Attorney. I brought up the EMS tax district...Godlewski ran into his office and shut the door. When the TA asked me about EMS, I told him he could submit questions and comments in writing and I would consider them! LOL!!!
Before Bob G was elected to the TB he had no trouble flapping his mouth at every TB meeting demanding answers about everything going on in the town. Now that he is on the TB when he's asked a question he tucks his tail between his legs and hides.
