Police agencies chip away at backlog of arrest warrants

The Police Department is still chipping away at its decade-old backlog of unserved warrants, but 113 accused felons remain on the loose.
That’s an improvement over 18 months ago, when 200 felony warrants had not been served. Some dated back as far as 1994 — and some were so old they had to be thrown out because the statute of limitations had passed.
In each case, police investigated a crime and found enough evidence to convince a judge to sign a warrant — but they never made the arrest.
The problem was brought to light in 2008 when City Councilman Gary McCarthy asked for a detailed accounting of the department’s unserved warrants.
There were 200 outstanding felony warrants and 800 misdemeanor warrants.
Last year, the police found 215 of their missing suspects, including 18 people who had warrants issued for them prior to 2002. The department also closed 505 warrants from 2008, Assistant Chief Brian Kilcullen said. ...........>>>>...................>>>>...............http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01600&AppName=1
