Buoyant majority Democrats reelected Susan Savage chairwoman of the Schenectady County Legislature Monday night, citing her leadership and vision in giving her a fourth two-year term. Robert Farley was re-elected leader of the Republicans, which saw its numbers shrink to two members — Farley and James Buhrmaster, both of Glenville — with the New Year’s Eve defection of Republican Angelo Santabarbara of Rotterdam to the Democratic caucus. Democrats now control 13 of the 15 seats in the chamber. Republicans held four seats a year ago and the majority before 2004. Majority Leader Gary Hughes, D-Schenectady, called Savage “someone who cares deeply for the role of public service.” Vice Chairwoman Judith Dagostino, D-Rotterdam, said the county witnessed an economic resurgence under Savage’s leadership, which included the creation of 3,300 jobs and the investment of more than $400 million in the local economy. Savage said the real reason Democrats have been successful in revitalizing the county is because of the “real talents [Democratic] legislators have brought to county government.” Six years ago, Savage said, “this Legislature set a course for this county.” Since then, the change has been astounding, she said. Savage cited three cuts in county property taxes over the last fi ve years, an 11 percent reduction in the county work force and changes in employee health-care programs that resulted in significant annual savings, cooperation agreements between governments and other highlights. Under the Democrats, “Schenectady County has reclaimed its rightful place as a leader in technology,” Savage said, referring to General Electric’s decision to site its renewable energy headquarters and its plans to build a $100 million facility to manufacture the next generation of sodium batteries in Schenectady. ...............>>>>....................>>>>......................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01003&AppName=1

Leader in technology? Did Malta get annexed to Schenectady? San Antonio? Mayberry?
