Suspect arrested in deadly shooting

BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter

Schenectady police said Wednesday that a Kentucky man had been charged with second-degree murder after allegedly shooting a city resident dead in front of his Paige Street home two days before Christmas. The shooting was apparently over a woman, police said.
Sgt. Luciano Savoia said Raymond D. Van Clief, 28, of Louisville, Ky., shot Elijah S. Trainer, 29, with a handgun on the sidewalk outside a two-family home at 421 Paige St. He said there was a quarrel shortly before gunshots were reported at 5 p.m.
The woman the men fought over is the ex-wife of the suspect and the girlfriend of the victim, Savoia said. He said the suspect is in the military, but he didn’t know which branch. He was in town visiting family, Savoia said.
Responding officers quickly detained a pair of men they found near the scene of the shooting while the victim was being treated by paramedics from the Schenectady Fire Department. Trainer was brought to Ellis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about a half-hour after the shooting.
Savoia said Van Clief was one of the two men who were taken into custody immediately following the shooting. He said the second man was interviewed by investigators but later released. ...................>>>>.......................>>>>.................................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01102&AppName=1

Accused shooter is barred from his ex-wife
BY MICHAEL GOOT Gazette Reporter
Reach Gazette reporter Michael Goot at 395-3105 or mgoot@dailygazette.net.

The Army sergeant accused of shooting his ex-wife’s new boyfriend to death two days before Christmas was served with an order of protection Thursday that bars him from any contact with the woman.
Raymond D. Van Clief, 27, of Louisville, Ky., was arraigned Thursday morning before Schenectady City Court Judge Christine Clark.
Van Clief allegedly shot 28-year-old Elijah S. Trainer with a handgun just before 5 p.m. on the sidewalk outside a home at 421 Paige St. Police detained him and another man shortly after the shooting and then arrested Van Clief.
Van Clief has been charged with seconddegree murder and a Class A misdemeanor aggravated harassment charge stemming from an incident from October where he allegedly left numerous threatening voice mails on his ex-wife’s phone.
Public Defender Mark Caruso entered a plea of not guilty on that charge on Van Clief’s behalf. No plea was entered on the murder charge because it is a felony and cannot be handled in City Court. Van Clief was sent to the Schenectady County Jail and is due back in court at 1:30 p.m. Thursday for a preliminary examination.
Dressed in a black short-sleeved shirt and jeans, Van Clief said little during the brief proceeding. He did ask Caruso whether his mother having visitation rights to see his children would be an issue and was assured it was not. .......................>>>>.......................>>>>..................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01001&AppName=1
