SCHENECTADY N. Broadway building gets new lease on life BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter
A crumbling building at the corner of North Broadway and Union Street is being restored, bringing the one-way street one step closer to full development. The building, which was in bad repair, is already looking so much better that the commercial tenants nearby have thanked the new owner for his work. “It’s kind of inspirational, the number of people who have commented,” said John Samatulski, who bought it three weeks ago. He started work on the brick side facade at once, trying to stabilize the building. “I want people to see visible change very quickly,” he said. “The first thing is to stabilize the facade. I’ve done a huge amount of work restoring the masonry.” That work will likely take three months. But Samatulski plans to do a painstaking interior restoration as well, which may take up to a year. Next Thanksgiving, he hopes to rent out the two upstairs apartments while leasing the ground floor to a retail business. That block of North Broadway is known for its two restaurants — Pinhead Susan’s and Parenzo’s — and the North Broadway Tavern. Samatulski thinks a retail business would be a good addition to balance the block and connect to Union Street, which has retail, offices, and bars and restaurants. ....................>>>>................>>>>..................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01403&AppName=1
