Playing politics in Rotterdam

    Rotterdam Republicans wondering why voters showed them the door earlier this month might consider the way they tinkered with the budget in the aftermath of the election.
    As a story in Wednesday’s Gazette detailed, their parting gift to incoming Democrats was a budget not only leaner than the one they proposed a month before the election but one reflecting their political priorities — priorities that voters soundly rejected Nov. 3.
    Residents might wonder why the $47,500 economic development officer’s job that lame duck Supervisor Steve Tommasone fought to create just nine months ago is suddenly no longer necessary; or why the $99,000 earmarked for the town attorney had to be cut to $65,000. Tommasone claims it was to reduce the dependency on the town’s shrinking fund balance, which — before the election — he proposed tapping to the tune of $1.7 million. But a more likely explanation is that the Democrats have indicated their intentions to replace both people — Aurelia Lazzari and Gerard Parisi — which is their prerogative.
    At the same time, Republicans approved a $120,000 line item to support the quasi-public Rotterdam Emergency Medical Services Inc. — something they’ve done in the past but had not proposed doing in the preliminary budget for good reason: Next month, the town board plans to set a voter referendum on the creation of a special taxing district for the paramedic/ambulance service. If voters decide against paying for the service, the town should stop. But now it may not be able to do so for another year.
    All may be fair in politics, and Democrats, at times, are no less capable of playing tricks with budgets and other things to sabotage their opponents’ efforts. But as with a couple of warring spouses when each demands to have the last word, there’s no winning this game. And when it comes to losing, it’s taxpayers who usually get stuck.

I would cancel the referendum now. Let the new adm make the tough choices.

The incoming administration has so much on their plate now it's not funny.  First order of business I hear is installing Deb as Deputy Supervisor, then they'll get down to real business.

These are all things they ran on so the way I see it is that the current board is reflecting the will of the people in this past election by reducing these few things and eliminating the positions that the incoming folks have proudly stated they will eliminate. What is the big deal? Of course the DG has a liberal, anti-Republican slant, they always hated the GOP in Rotterdam, and were big boosters for Jimmy C and the rest all those years. That is why I canceled my subscription.

Rotterdam Approves 2010 Budget

The Rotterdam Town Board passed resolution to make the preliminary 2010 town budget the Annual Budget of Rotterdam for the fiscal year of 2010 on Nov. 10 at the Rotterdam Town Hall at 7 p.m.

The budget, which will amount to over $20 million will take effect at the beginning of the year after the unanimous vote Tuesday night by the members of the board, but not first without a comment from members of the incoming board of 2010.

The board held a public hearing for discussion of the town budget proposed for 2010 on Nov. 5 and again allowed a public hearing on the night of Nov. 10 before the preliminary budget went to vote, opening the floor to town members to speak their mind on the issues of the budget ranging from the proposed taxing district for the Rotterdam EMS to property assessments throughout the town. Bob Godlewski, town board elect, presented his feelings on parts of the budget ranging from the assessment of non-homestead and homestead homes to the decrease in the town attorney fees. Godlewski was also accompanied by fellow elected town board candidates Democrat Matthew Martin and Nicola DiLeva.

In a suggested changes to the 2010 preliminary budget, attorney fees for the coming year were decreased from $99,000 in the preliminary budget to $65,000, while tax case attorney fees have been reduced from $40,000 to $20,000, according to information provided by the town.

Town board supervisor Steve Tommasone and Godlewski debated the management of the town budget for 2010, until Tommasone stated that he would not go “line by line” in the budget and that he could have, “talked about this in debate form, but we didn’t get to do that,” citing the boycott of the League of Women Voter’s night by the Rotterdam Democrats during the recent election. ....................>>>>................>>>>............http://www.spotlightnews.com/news/view_news.php?news_id=1258398935

Where is Cal on this?  I have heard Diane Martin will be the Dep. Supervisor.  Anybody know if Mike Griesemer is staying on?  Cal would have the inside on this.
