Political shift in Rotterdam By PAUL NELSON, Staff writer First published in print: Friday, November 6, 2009
ROTTERDAM -- Democrats took back the reins of power at Town Hall on Election Day, and the party's local chairman credited its success to hard work and a positive message.
''Our people just went out, worked hard and took their message to the people, and stayed away from the negative campaigning," a jubilant Bill Cooke, chairman of the Rotterdam Democratic Party, said Wednesday. The Democrats won the races for supervisor, clerk and two Town Board seats. Incumbent Democrat Eunice Esposito was re-elected to her 11th term as town clerk.
But outgoing GOP Supervisor Steven Tommasone said the Democrats won by distorting his record on taxes, economic development and the reassessment that brought Rotterdam to full market value.

83 posts and no mentions the EMS Tax?
Benny, Only the NNTP candidates took a public position on the EMS Tax. They had the courage to go on record as opposing the creation of a new tax district. The Republicans on the Rotterdam Town Board appeared ready to approve the creation of the tax district using the "three (or four, sans Mertz) men in a room" approach. They agreed to place the issue up for a public referendum only after the issue was publicized and town residents expressed their views during town board meetings. Will the Republicans change course and approve the creation of the tax district as their last act before leaving office? To my knowledge, none of the Democrat candidates took a position on the creation of a new tax district. The voters in Rotterdam seemingly did not demand that the Democrats spoke about their positions on any issues, other than a promised change to those who occupy the seats in government. I attended several Rotterdam Town Board meetings and did not hear Mr. Del Gallo make a single statement on any issue being discussed. I must state that the only comments that I heard ANY of the Democratic hopefuls make were by Mr. Godlewski and Mr. Martin. If I were a resident of Rotterdam, I would have been left wanting for more re: the platforms and qualifications of the candidates for elected office. Elections in small towns are often popularity and/or beauty contests, both of which I have no change of competing and winning I predict that the residents of Rotterdam will have yet another "surprise" when the Dems push through this new dedicated stream of funding that will only further increase the tax burden on already oppressed residents. You see, in my estimation, the two parties are presently more alike than different. I hope to be proven wrong. A government that represents the interests of its constituents would be a refreshing change from that experienced at all levels. |

yep it will be great all for 1 and 1 for all ms. diane will have a single widowed senior paying for a family of 5 on the ems issue every house pays the same - witnessed at the public hearing on EMS
begin humor i rather count heads and pay that way her way then how do you deal with business - they could call mohawk. end humor
" A government that represents the interests of its constituents would be a refreshing change from that experienced at all levels." - BL
fixed campaign funding. no donations
for STAR you better start at the top Benny not the bottom, all the crumbs are gone with the winter wind and watch your school board candidates and see which way they lean but we wont talk about that...

NO EMS....private, or use as you go......
I believe it will be 'set up' all nice nice and paraded around for a few years until the $$ is touted as the problem(only because a line in the budget was moved up)....then,,,,as in Poedunk Rotterdam(or any small town USA),,,,Frank/Joe/Bob/Sally/or whom ever Nice Neighbor, will 'step up' and 'purchase' REMS..... there by 'saving Poedunk Rotterdam' its woes of $$........
been done before.......how to start up a business off the taxpayers back, but right under their noses: 101..... openings available every night of your life and every trip to the bank and every time you fill out your taxes....
.....GET OFF MY BACK.......SHOW ME THE $$ TRAIL...... |
