''The Color Purple'' was far from a smash at the Proctors box office last week. Theatre CEO Philip Morris didn't have immediate attendance figures. Opening night at the 2,700-seat venue drew about 1,400 and the usual strong Friday night turnout was only 1,200.
Despite the lower numbers, folks I spoke with after shows on three nights all said the Oprah Winfrey presentation was super.
There was plenty of traffic at the Proctors because there were other smaller stage productions at the GE Theatre and musical programs elsewhere in the downtown arts complex.
