Holiday cheer SCHENECTADY
Parade honors city’s past

BY AMEERAH CETAWAYO Gazette Reporter

The 41st annual Gazette Holiday Parade celebrated history and patriotism as scattered sightings of Santa hats, families pushing strollers and tugging leashes with furry companions blended in with the scent of cotton candy and the radiance of glow sticks.
This year’s theme was “Celebrating Schenectady’s Bicentennial.” The Daily Gazette is one of the sponsors of the parade along with The Chamber of Schenectady County and several others. ..............>>>>....................>>>>..................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00103&AppName=1

Saturday a bad night for holiday parade

I just had to write re the Nov. 21 Christmas parade in Schenectady. Last year, because of the parade route, St. John the Baptist Church, which is now closed, could not have its Saturday evening Mass.
This year the parade was again on a Saturday. The alternate routes were so jammed with cars that it was very frustrating trying to get home.
I am very surprised there were not any accidents. Cars going across State Street to Nott Terrace were in double lines, not obeying the traffic lights, and in order to get to the Stockade, my relative had to go up Eastern Avenue and down University Place and onto Nott Street to finally get home from St. Joseph’s Church, which is located at the corner of Lafayette and State streets.
Is it prohibited to have the parade on Friday night because of the shows at Proctors? There wasn’t a show at Proctors last night [Saturday]. Regardless, Saturday is a very bad night to have the Christmas parade. If you really cannot have it on a Friday, then Sunday evening would be an ideal time to have it. Most everyone is home on Sunday, and it would be a nice time for the parade.
If you do have the parade on a Saturday, you must have policemen directing traffi c on alternate routes. I am sure this is not feasible because of overtime.
I hope you consider something more realistic for next year, and have the Christmas parade on any day except Saturday. A year goes by quickly, so it is not too early to think about this change.

Not to worry.....they change the parade name, night and route like they change their underwear. (I hope)

Wasn't it the churches and superstitions that prevailed the Dark Ages???? Now we just have Global Warming for that......
