Was talking to my brother who was visited by some candidates or their workers.  Candidates obviously are looking up who lives where and they going to the state unclaimed funds website to look up the voters names and they obviously trying to come across as "hey, we found money for you."

I don't think it's the candidates business to know if any entity owes us money.  And it's one thing if the candidates merely saw that a voters name is on such a list, but they have access to the people/business, etc that owe the voter money.

Might be better if the candidates just provided voters with a list of places where they should check and see if there is money for them, like "maybe the IRS owes you, have you taken advantage of every decution, be sure to do your taxes carefully." and "have you enrolled in every tax advantage you can get, STAR, vet, low income, disabled, etc." and "does the state owe you money, check the comptroller's website."

Between all the deed stuff on line, peoples POA documents on line, the unclaimed funds, salaries of the average government worker all online, except for the pay of political patronatge, policy makers, and elected, no one else's salary should be made available so easily.  Why should every tom, dick and harry have access to a lowly litlee file clerk's salary, a clerk who has no say in his or her pay, just took a job.

Which candidates? Sounds pretty cheesy.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

Ya, really.  That's a crappy thing to do, it's none of their business.  What are they looking for, a donation?

Name names - this needs to come out - republican or democrat.

There are some groups who do this for free and there are some companies that will research for you and charge a fee. This is really nothing new, to my knowledge.

I know that I have gotten letters from people that I don't know that say they found monies waiting for me to claim it through the state comptroller's office.

Since Brad and Michael are visitors/contributors to this forum - and probably the other two also, I'd like to hear their comments on this.

I read the post in this forum yesterday.  I was waiting for the politicians who post at this site to comment and to commit themselves before responding.  And, at least two of them didn't let me down.

The No New Tax Party is sponsoring the "Unclaimed Funds Recovery Campaign" to assist people to reclaim money that is being held by New York State and that rightfully belongs to them and NOT to the government.

We have spent countless hours querying the publicly accessible State Comptroller's Unclaimed Funds online database (URL below) for residents who have unclaimed funds of which they may not be aware.  We have printed many of the claim forms for residents and have offered free notary services if needed to complete and submit the claim forms.

http://www.osc.state.ny.us/ouf/index.htm

The reaction to our effort in this forum is not unexpected.  The public rightfully has a sinister view of politicians who routinely work to seize peoples' wealth, not return to them the money that they earned.  If the state government was genuinely interested in returning the funds to the owners, it could contact many of them as the registered addresses are on record.

Although there are companies that charge for recovery services, we are conducting this campaign as a public service and to reinforce our contention that the government takes too much of peoples' money.

I will share with you a few experiences that we have had in informing residents of money that is being held by the government that belongs to them.

Several people were aware of the funds and have already submitted the claims to request payment.  One stated that two to three months after submitting the signed and notarized claim form, he received a letter stating that his claim form was received.  Why after this length of time was a check not sent rather than a form letter stating that the claim was received?  -- inefficiency in government.

A few people stated that they knew of the funds and that the amounts due were very small and not worth requesting payment.  The public records do NOT state the amounts of the funds held.  I've been told that owners can call the Office of the State Comptroller - Office of Unclaimed Funds to obtain this information.

We spoke with several people who expressed gratitude for the public service that we are providing.  One was a widow with no computer access.  She was unaware of the funds that were owed to her deceased husband.

A couple with who we spoke had funds owed to them from several sources.  Both had recently lost their jobs and remain unemployed.  Though they don't know the amounts owed to them, they were pleased to learn that there may be some funds available to them during this period of hardship.

Typical politicians do not work on behalf of taxpayers.  The No New Tax Party candidates are advocates for the overburdened taxpayers.  We do not expect nor will we accept any compensation for our efforts.  The campaign is our way of connecting with the residents and relaying our message of fiscal conservatism and service to the public.

An additional service that should be provided by elected officials in government is to assist residents who wish to grieve their property tax assessments.  The process is convoluted and the research required to present a sound case to the review board can be considerable.

Most public officials are first in line to take money from the taxpayers and spend it, but last to offer assistance in ensuring that citizens receive what is rightfully theirs.

I know of instances where unclaimed funds are placed when an elderly person has a lot of debt, and the families absolve themselves of the person when they pass away.  If a family member (even 50 years later, I think) were to claim that $20 from the unclaimed funds in the name of their relative, they would be exposed to the debt.

I like a lot of things you are doing, Brad...you by far shine out brighter than your compatriots.  I hope in the future you choose to distance yourself from them, as they are viewed by many as whiners with no answers - while you sit, talk and share knowledge.

That being said, you could be putting people at risk of assuming risk they don't wish to (especially if it's another generation.)  Steer clear from it!

I am a little surprised. People are responsible for themselves in that area. I would think this is not a campaign issue.

I personally am 100% against this.  Brad argues that he wants Govt to HELP the citizens ... I think Govt needs to stay out of our lives.

What's next? Finding out if there's judgements or collections about a person based on the public record in the county clerk's office? Finding out if someone is due to make their last mortgage payment based on a filing in the clerks office? Segregating mortgage records to see who's doing business with a bank that might be on shaky ground, all in an effort to "help them" ?

Public records are a wonderful thing, but personally, I don't want t a politician looking up that information - it's none of your (their) business.

How would you like it if I did a search in the county clerk's office to see if you had bad debt, judgements, etc - and showed up at your door to say "I can help you with this"?

Stay out of my business - Government is too entrenched in my (our) life(s) now.

MT,

I have to say, I enjoy your spin, by painting a picture of Brad favoring BIG GOVERNMENT because of this symbolic gesture during their campaign.  I believe the NNTP was attempting to send the message that they are working to get the taxpayer their money back from the BIG GOVERNMENT.  I guess some people are hyper-sensitive.

I'm pretty sure that if you ask any of the NNTP candidates, they are not looking to create a government task force to go through public records looking for unclaimed funds if they get elected.
