Will Schenectady’s dance with Democrats ever end?

As a politically independent conservative and Schenectady resident for over 30 years, I have observed the demise of the once-strong Republican Party in the city. Without any opposition, the Democrat-controlled City Council can do whatever it wants. As the saying goes, absolute power corrupts absolutely.
In 2007, the Republicans chose a sacrificial lamb to run against Mayor Stratton and the sole candidate for City Council was a retired cop with no political experience. What a sad state of affairs!
A Schenectady GOP official stated in the Gazette last year that the political atmosphere in the city is “cyclical” and that the Republicans will bounce back. I don’t think so. I believe the Schenectady political scene has become another Albany forever. That is, all Democrat all the time.

Answer: Yes. It is the people who vote them in. The writer doesn't undertand that no one wants to run because they afraid to run, be beat up and outspent 20-1 and then lose because the non-welfare "thinking" city dwellers are mad at Bush and won't vote Republican. The political landscape in the city also includes a vast number of folks who receive government welfare and will never vote any way but Democrat because they are afraid Republicans will not give them welfare. So between the productive voters and the non-productive voters, the majority is pulling the "D" lever without bothering to see who is on the "R" lever, making it impossible for a Republican to win.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

Not to mention, the Republican Party attempting to unseat one of their own two term town councilman.  They're their own worst enemy.  I think they pulled the plug on the Barre/Viscusi race, basically giving the county seat to the Democrats.  Schenectady County Republicans are a laughing stock.  GB is just providing us with more proof of finger point and reasons why the current County Republicans CAN'T lead.

Schenectady County Republican strategy is to wait for political cycles and finger pointing.

They clearly have no platform any longer. Don't get some of us wrong here. We are not liking the dem control thing goin' on in this county. The cons are a waste of our time...not even a consideration. We are waiting for the reps to get it together....and we are still waiting. We are clearly NOT going to flip a rep lever just because they are not a dem.

It's even worse than the letter writer stated. The one City Council candidate in 2007 was a CONS. For 2 straight election cycles there has not been a REP for City Council or County Legislature. Who is the City GOP chairman?

Rotterdam is better? This year a CONS and GREEN on REP line for County Legislature. They dump an incumbent REP Town Board member who should be running for higher office. In Nisky the REP Supervisor is knocked off the ballot for violating the law. No DA candidate? Nothing will change unless the NNTP goes Countywide.

The dumped incumbent got what he deserved.  The people of his party have spoken albeit a few months earlier then the general voting public.  Face it Mertz was a flash in the pan and Steve will take Joe and Joe over the side with him.  The ship be sinkin for the REPS!  Buchanan and Parisi are a disgrace and will be large detrements come November.  I can't wait!!

Dancing with Dems is dancing with the stars

In response to a Sept. 30 letter from Jack Liberis, “Will Schenectady’s dance with Democrats ever end?” My question to Mr. Liberis as a fellow taxpayer, why would you want it to?
Given the track records of both parties locally in the last 40 or so years, it should be obvious that after 30 some years of a Republican majority in the county Legislature, and after a combined seven mayoral terms of Republicans Frank Duci and Al Jurczynski, our city and county cannot risk the financial consequences of more Republican leadership!
Remember the year-after-year tax increases from the county? How about the city being, if I remember correctly, $13 million in the hole and having junk bond status?
Now, do you remember when it all turned around? I believe it was 2004, when the Dems got the mayor’s office and the majority in the Legislature. I ask again: Why would or should the taxpayers of this county and city risk more Republican leadership?

Republicans = economic failure like  a few years ago Dems = weak on terror.. not saying it's TRUE, but the perception is out there and people follow the band.

For 35 years the REPS ran the County very efficiently. In a few years the DEMS have created record deficits, plan a huge County home that no one can afford and refuse to cut Metrograft which has one failure after another.

In 10 years of Metrograft name a major company that has relocated into this County? Not from Rotterdam to the City with a taxpayer giveaway. The collapse of the REPS has more to do with pathetic leadership than any great work the DEMS done did. The one bright spot on the horizon is the NO NEW TAX PARTY. Something will fill the vacuum-the letter writer might be happy but no one else is. Checks and balances remember?

Is the NO NEW TAX PARTY really a 3rd party making it a 3 horse race?  Or is it just the REPS (a few smart ones who know they are on a sinking ship locally) trying to re-brand themselves?  That's my big question, the NNTP so far seems quite appealing the more i read up on them.
