ya, Business District with MANY MANY taxpaying locally owned businesses, I can see why YOU wouldn't want to consider that a "favorite" neighborhood. You like the Proctor's district better.
I actually prefer to patronize businesses in Rotterdam. But if I had to choose between Downtown and the Upper Union Street business districts -- I would patronize the businesses Downtown first.

You would snub the businesses that stand on their own two feet and go to the businessses that cause people to lose their homes?

What we really need in Rotterdam or Schenectady is for Ben's Kosher Restaurant + Deli + Catering to open a location up here. I will have to put a bug in Ray Gillen's ear to try to lure them up here.
Yeah, there you go again, avoiding the question.
Wold you rather have tax money spent on arts or have tax money spent to save and preserve peoples lives. You think it's better to spent money on arts than on police and fire? You prefer to spend on arts than inspecting bridge----you would prefer that bridges fall down and people are killed just as long as money is apent on the arts. You would prefer to spend on arts than locking up criminals.
DV, the governor said cuts need to be made, there is no money, the "Bank of Taxpayers" has dried up.
You want arts, pay for it out of your down dang pocket, oh wait, you don't work

Ben's Restaurant and Deli is worth the 160 mile trip down to Queens. Of course, I don't make the trip down just to eat there ... it is near friends and one of my favorite historical sites in the country -- Sagamore Hill. My other favorite place is FDR's Springwood in Hyde Park. That of course is just a few miles from one of my absolute favorite restaurants The Beekman Arms. Which reminds me -- in just 3 short weeks I will make my first of several yearly visits to FDR's house --- I like to go every year on the anniversary of his birth and the anniversary of his death --- and then either in the summer or autumn. FDR loved the Beekman Arms -- ate dinner there on every election night from about 1910 to 1945. The place made national news last year when Chelsea Clinton was married and many guests stayed there.

Go to Upper Union and save yourself a road trip. Gershon's is about the best deli you're going to find anywhere in the Capital District. They make everything on site, cook their own turkey, ham, brisket, salads, etc. They are fantastic!
BTW, they employ over a dozen employees, pay income, property, school, sales and City 'fees'. Maybe Mr. MacDonald and Mr. Gillen should go there and see how a real business does it without taking County funds and tax exemptions on the property.
Economic 101.........businesses will not and do not survive 'long term' if they shift the tax burden to the taxpayers. The city of schenectady is proof of that! Residents are leaving in record numbers and MT pleasant has the highest vacancy rate. The 'bad element' have taken over the entire city.
If ya wanna do business......pay your fair share!!

Gershon's is the best we hve here BUT it is not kosher. The truth is kosher delis/rstaurants have never survived in the Captial District. It costs way to much money to support them. It isn't the same for kosher bakerirs. There cost is minimal. Anything involving kosher meat requires a supervisor on the premises almost constantly. Ben's kosher from Queen will never come here. Closes you will see is Price Chopper taking over some small area trying to make that work. Other than Price Chopper the few kosher establishments around are owned by non-Jews.

Then you must be on Upper Union a lot. Name one retailer Downtown besides governmental gin mills /eateries. Rachel is right about Gershon's Deli which is a Upstate treasure. But it's no Ben's or Second Avenue Deli which are world class.
Gershon's carries Kosher items and is quite busy during Jewish Holidays -whitefish, challah, lox, noodle pudding, etc. So although it's not 100% Kosher, it has a wide variety of kosher produce and items.
Again, people should really begin to frequent and support the businesses in Schenectady which actually pay their property and school taxes. Personally, I admire and support businesses like Gershon's, Ambition, MT Pleasant Bakery and Combos - all businesses surviving in the midst of favored Metroplex projects which contribute very little (if nothing) to the tax base and some minimum wage jobs.
I have Jewish friends that buy from gershons. So rachel is correct. Hell, the Jewish temple is right up the road.

Great remark. It's not supporting any "local business'-it's supporting FULLY ASSESSED local businesses. The owner of Open Door is on both the horrible DSIC and Metrograft reason to go to Barnes and Noble.
Unlike Marcella's which was granted a tax free $2 million dollar building to get off of Crane Street, the bakery and Combos still remain. Even Frank Gallo and the diner left MP.
Metroplex has aided businesses to GET OUT of the neighborhoods and ignored those which remain. Again, the neighborhoods in need are ignored and left to die. DV should know, St Adalbert's is in the middle of this war zone. Many of the parishoners make a beeline for their cars after mass and hightail it out of MP.
Gee, I never think of Mt. pleasant bakery. Honestly, I thought they were closed.
