SI says it cuts factory output
Maker of chemials, resins shuts local plant 5 to 6 days a month

By LARRY RULISON, Business writer
First published in print: Wednesday, August 12, 2009

ROTTERDAM -- SI Group, the Niskayuna-based maker of chemicals and resins, says it has been shutting down its Rotterdam Junction factory 5 to 6 days a month.

The work stoppages are in response to the global recession, which has reduced the need for the company's products, used in such things as automobile tires, fuel additives, plastics and construction materials.

The company employs about 200 people at the factory and another 200 at its headquarters in Niskayuna, which also is where the company does its research and development work, although no layoffs have been needed.

"We're looking at our business model globally," said SI Group spokeswoman Juliana Lam. "We're operating a bit below our normal volume."

SI Group was founded in 1906 as Schenectady Varnish by chemist W. Howard Wright. The company was later known as Schenectady International but changed its name to SI Group three years ago to reflect the global nature of its operations.

The company, which is still family-owned, has 2,200 employees in 20 locations in 13 countries and has had more than $1 billion in annual sales in recent years.

Lam said the recession is also affecting factories in other locations, but she did not give specifics for those plants or the company's overall sales figures.

"We're assessing our global model as we go," she said.

Don't know.  I requested the book from the SCPL.  The wonderful establishment called me when they only had 1/3 of the book on CD...the LAST 1/3 of it.  So now, I pretty much have to sit on it and wait until it comes.

Anyway, every time a company gets a PILOT, it's only turning into a TILOOPP (taxes in lieu of other people's payment) for the residents.
