SCHENECTADY -- The Schenectady Greenmarket has started programs in an effort to make fresh vegetables, fruits and meat available to local residents of all income levels.
Customers can now access their Electronic Benefits Transfer card, or food stamp benefits, through a Greenmarket wireless machine at the main market table. They are then given $1 tokens that can be used at 24 vendor stalls.
Food stamp/EBT eligible items include all fruits and vegetables, cheeses, milk, bread, meat, poultry, eggs, jam, honey and more. The Farmers Market Federation of New York has provided the wireless terminal.............>>>>.......................>>>>.........http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=828605&category=YTSCHENECTADY
Wonderful, they can now buy $24/lb. steaks and $5/loaf bread. We might as well give them caviar and champagne too when they come in for the benefits. Get rid of that hot dog stand and set up a Brie and pate cart out front too.
"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
Hey.......just another example of how even the farmers market isn't making a go of it in schenectady. So the government steps in and allows food stamps to be accepted to insure it to be a success. Something the gazette can boast about...again!

We are writing in response to your Aug. 7 article, “Schenectady Greenmarket adds payment options.” The article highlights the new payment options available at the Schenectady Sunday market. The options are food stamp benefit card, Women, Infant, Children (WIC) and senior citizen farmers’ market coupons, credit/ debit cards and checks. All it takes to use benefit cards is a simple swipe, just as if you were using a credit or debit card. Individuals then receive wooden tokens to spend at the farmers’ booths. Food stamps, WIC and senior citizen farmers’ market coupons help these individuals to meet their nutritional needs. The new payment options at the Schenectady Greenmarket make locally grown fruits and vegetables more accessible to all. In addition, our entire community benefits from the use of food stamps at local farmers’ markets. Our local farmers profi t from it. What most people do not know is that for every food stamp dollar spent $1.84 in revenue is created that flows into the local economy. We applaud the Schenectady Greenmarket for making fresh fruits and vegetables accessible to all members of the community. For more information about food stamps contact Catholic Charities’ Schenectady Nutrition Outreach and Education Program at 374-2427 or Aging Services Program at 372-5667.
My take?.....They aren't making enough money. So food stamps will bump up the revenues.
