NISKAYUNA — Town police said a Niskayuna High School volunteer softball coach was arrested on rape charges this afternoon, after he allegedly provided alcohol and performed sex acts with a child under the age of 17. Joseph A. Annello III, 46, of Niskayuna, was arrested on five counts of third-degree rape, one count of third-degree criminal sexual act, one count of unlawfully dealing with a minor and five counts of endangering the welfare of a minor. He was arraigned in town court and remanded to the Schenectady County Jail where he remains in lieu of $75,000 cash bail or $150,000 bond. Police said Annello, a self-employed volunteer coach with the softball team, performed sex acts with the minor on five separate occasions at his residence. Investigators claim he also provided the youth with alcohol. Niskayuna Central School District Superintendent Kevin Baughman confirmed Annello is a coach with the softball team and had been volunteering for "several years." Joseph A. Annello III was a father with children in the Niskayuna school district. He volunteered with local youth sports to be active with his children’s teams, according to his attorney. He had also volunteered with school district softball teams for six years, without trouble, according to the school district. So when Annello was arrested last week by Niskayuna police, accused of raping a high school girl at his residence, questions arose. Was something missed? As a volunteer coach, did he have to submit to a background check? Would a background check have even uncovered anything disqualifying him? According to the state Education Department, as a volunteer, Annello would not have been required to submit to a background check. Current legislation doesn’t allow it, according to the state. Paid district employees, including coaches, must submit fingerprints for the check. Background checks are good if one is actually caught....be careful how we tread here....hysteria could lead to a total lockout of parental involvement at public schools.....and cost $$ for a false sense of security......

SCHENECTADY -- A week after a volunteer coach from Niskayuna was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a child, an area state lawmaker is calling for background checks for volunteer coaches who work with underage youngsters.
"I have consistently called for increased protection of our most vulnerable citizens by requiring volunteer-organization background checks, specifically for organizations that work with children," said Assemblyman James Tedisco, R-Schenectady/Saratoga, in a prepared statement. "We must make certain that the people working with our children have no motive except a selfless commitment to helping young people."
Niskayuna police charged Joseph Annello III with five counts of rape, one count each of criminal sexual act and unlawfully dealing with a minor and five counts of misdemeanor child endangerment. Police say Annello, 46, had sex with a minor five times and provided her with alcohol. He is self-employed and had volunteered as a coach with the Niskayuna High school girl's softball team in his hometown. Police are continuing their probe.

A Niskayuna softball parent contended at Monday night’s school board meeting that complaints had been made to the school district against a softball coach prior to the coach’s rape arrest. The parent, Tom O’Donnell, declined to say what type of complaints were made against Joseph A. Annello III, except that they were not sexual in nature. O’Donnell said he wanted to respond to comments made by Superintendent Kevin Baughman that Annello had had a “very positive” reputation until his arrest. “[The complaints] certainly refute the notion of a ‘very positive’ reputation amongst the student athletes, parents and coaches,” O’Donnell said. The complaints, O’Donnell said, were made to coaches, the school athletic director and to school board members. Annello, 46, of Randall Road, was arrested Aug. 7, accused of performing sex acts on a minor on five separate occasions at his residence. On at least one occasion, he is accused of providing the victim with Mike’s Hard Lemonade, an alcoholic beverage, according to papers filed in court. It's worse than that. Ms. Diane O'Donnell is a long time Nisky Town Board member. If there was an issue SHE should have done something about it. The schools would have taken her call demanding a resignation. She did nuthin. How dare she blame the Nisky School Board for her inaction? If she had blown a whistle this crime could have been prevented.

Former Niskayuna coach admits raping student
NISKAYUNA -- A former volunteer high school softball coach will be sentenced next month to two years behind bars after admitting to having sex with a high school student at his home last summer, according to the prosecutor in the case. At least one of those times, police said, Joseph Annello III gave the girl alcohol.
He pleaded guilty on Friday in Schenectady County Court, to a charge of third-degree rape, as part of a plea deal that also requires him to receive between 3 to 10 years of post release supervision and register as a sex offender.

Most coaching positions require a coaching certificate from the state. What is the point of this if not to check the background? I know Mohonasen required a federal finger print check too.

That was cause of a coach there in the early 80's ... and a SS teacher during the same period.
