Let's not forget the Rathergate scandal.  Remember when 60 minutes aired a report taking into question G.W. Bush's Air National Guard service?  Then it turned out the the documents Dan used for the story were forged.  And that was aired 2 months before the election, in efforts to submarine Bush's re-election bid.

So to answer your question as to whether questions of character have ever been asked of other presidents.  I would point out that, not only were these questions asked, but in this case, story's were outright fabricated in order to damage Bush's character.  

So to help you draw a contrast.  Dan Rather and CBS runs a story about Bush based on forged document 2 months before the election.  And Lou Dobbs is told by the his boss Jon Klein the president of CNN, that the Obama birth certificate is a "dead story", in efforts to suppress the story 6 months into his presidency, or 3 1/2 year before the election.

At one time in many State Universities - the school l ID was your social security number. In community college -he Registrars office had a couple of big books on chains on the front desk with the name and SS # of everyone that ever- yes ever went to the school-
My Philosphy teacher could very well have been a communist for all I know-

Cicero- Yes - I HATE That stuff- All the stuff about those Bush documents ( which I honestly didnt follow much ) and the stuff about Palin and her family - which went on for ever- everything about her and the cheezy attacks on her family- is disgusting   am I clear ?  I dont like it- I avoid the Political angle and political philosophy as much as I can  - Everything I said applies to both parties-  I am not a big 10 commandment fan- but all this I think  falls under # 7 bearing false witness against your neighbor -
