SCHENECTADY COUNTY CUTS TAKE-HOME VEHICLES BY 53% SAVING TAXPAYERS $85,000 ANNUALLY AND $340,000 SINCE 2005.
(Schenectady, NY) Susan Savage, Chairwoman of the Schenectady County Legislature, has announced that Schenectady County has cut the number of take-home vehicles for County employees by 53% during the past four years, saving taxpayers $85,000 annually and $340,000 since its inception.
“When I became Chair of the County Legislature in 2004, I pledged that this Legislature would bring leaner and more efficient government to Schenectady County,” said Chair Savage. “One obvious target was unnecessary employee perks, with the most obvious being the take-home vehicle for an employee who did not require it. This Legislature took action and reduced our take-home vehicle fleet from 32 to 15 – a reduction of 53%.”
The take-home vehicle reduction has provided annual savings of $85,000, or an average $5,000 per take-home vehicle eliminated, with total savings of $340,000 over the past four years.
Schenectady County now provides a take-home vehicle only to those individuals who are emergency responders to emergency situations, such as the District Attorney, the Undersheriff, the Fire Coordinator, or who otherwise have a critical need for a vehicle which benefits the County.
County Legislator Judy Dagostino who chairs the Labor and Civil Service Committee, the Committee which oversaw this reform, stated, “This was clearly a matter of cutting fat and waste from government. With this reform, we have moved decisively away from a culture of entitlement to a culture of public service.”
Why did it take from 2004 until now to cut that waste, could it be it's an election year and your party is getting a little flack about taxing and spending?
Glad to hear that suzie is saving us so much money. Doesn't quite make sense with the enormous county tax increase. But then again, should we expect less? It is after all an election year and the gazette appears to be gearing up.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
So wait, we're still paying out ~$80k in perks for them to take the vehicles home (and whatever else they do with them) ... are they taxed as income to the person receiving the benefit?
well, then pretty soon their healthcare benefits will be taxed too.....
we must not use it as punishment but for foresight.....we dont want them to pay taxes on 'the benefit' soooooo, get rid of 'the benefit'.....as employers we can......

Amazing how we get all the cuts just before a big election. Would any of those that are running for seats that visit this forum cut spending immediately? Wait until their re-election needs a boost?
