At 82, all of us should be as game as Eunice Esposito.
One of the most aggressive campaigns shaping up this fall in Schenectady County will be the one to unseat Esposito, the Rotterdam Town Clerk who says her largest joy is to take days cooking an Italian meal for her extended family.
The town's Republican committee believes it has found a candidate to finally end her 28-year tenure.
The GOP committee is backing Lynn Fiorillo, who works as a secretary in the supervisor's office. Esposito, a Democrat, has beaten back challengers many, many times; in her most recent contest, she bested her opponent, Catherine O'Connor, by more than 3,000 votes.
But Rotterdam Republican chairman Gerard Parisi said this time Republicans think they have a strong enough candidate to force the octogenarian into retirement. And they're prepared to spend money to do it.
"This is the first year in a long, long time we feel we've got a legitimate candidate who can do the job," said Parisi, whose law firm does work for the town.
Esposito isn't offended. Heck, she says, bring them on.

so why didn't they interview the other party involved, Lynn?
I know I'm just on my first cup of coffee this morning, but I don't understand this statement. Can someone 'splain please?

Well then....that explains it.....the media is 'liberal'....that's why? One of the only ways Lynn can guarantee some media coverage is by writing an editorial in the gazette. Or she could call Justin Mason for an interview. He's real good!

Ok so you all seem to feel that Eunice will win big. Why? Given the fact that she has held the job for many years doesn't really explain a whole lot. To me at least, I am looking at the mentality of politics more than anything else. Why do some people crave the desire to keep running year after year. Does anyone in Rotterdam or anywhere else desire a change? Doesn't this seem like politics as usual? I am not knocking anyones view here on this blog, but I do see a lot of biased opinions without anything to back it up. Can Eunice's life be so empty that this is all she has? Could Lynn be keeping quiet for now to see "Euney" hang herself in the paper? Can Eunice do no wrong? Can Lynn (or whomever else is running) do no right? From the other boards, people want some in and others out. I guess I am blind as to why this community would want to re-elect an 82 year old woman who would rather be cooking for her extended family and who has stated that she is staying even if it kills her. Damn is any job worth death?
First of all, it is a 'clerks' job!! For God's sake! And a highly paid one with benefits at that! And for the life of me I can not figure out why in the heck it is an 'elected' position. Really!
Second, I'm not a politician, just a resident, so I really don't know what is going on politically. But there sure as hell ain't a job out there I would die for. Especially not if I was 82 years old. In my opinion, Euney made this political right from the get go. Sad but true. And in making it political, she just took the credibility out of 'doing it for the residents' speech.
Third, I don't really care who is in that position, as long as they can get the job done. They are clearly not in a 'decision making' position, so I could care less. I don't think I ever voted for that position....ever! And it yet amazes me and I have yet to hear the reasoning behind, what started as a one person office, is now a two person office. Why? Is it the increase in work load? Or is it because Euney can't keep up any longer? Once those questions are honestly answered, we can all draw our own conclusions. Cause heck, if it is because Euney can't keep up...then Lynn should be voted in and the part timer should be canned, hence saving the town some money.
How about term limits?? IMHO

I am really not sure why it is an elected position either. Government's rules I guess. But at least I got an honest answer from someone regarding my post. I do think that you hit the nail on the head, Euney can't do it and she herself said, "I need an assistant not a typist". I have never voted for that position either and I do agree with you that she turned this political when she went to the media regarding this whole thing! It is time for her to step aside! If the next person can't do it, then in four years vote for someone else in. Isn't that why we vote in the first place?

Crazy,,,you are not crazy...and I do agree with you.....This town needs to get savvy very very quickly or it will end up as Mont Pleasant is now........although the folks in the 'know'(as Sal likes to say) really dont give a flying CRAP as long as their 'buddies' scratch their asses......JMHO
I want VALUE for my paid taxes.....WHERE IS IT!!!!!!! Eunice just put this piece in for a little sideshow and some more political smoke for our butts.....

FIORILLO TO RUN AGAINST ESPOSITO FOR ROTTERDAM TOWN CLERK
Posted on: 06/29/09 Written by: Jackie Sher, email: news@spotlightnews.com
Lynn Fiorillo, an employee of the Town of Rotterdam Supervisor's Office, is running against Eunice Esposito for the position of Town Clerk.
Esposito, 82, has worked for the Town since 1969 and has served as Town Clerk for 28 years. She is backed by the Rotterdam Democratic Committee.
"I’m running for re-election," said Esposito. "I've gotten a lot of calls from residents of Rotterdam ... They’ve given me a lot of support," said Esposito.
Fiorillo has worked for the town for four years.
“Lynn's combination of both private business and government work experience, alongside her energy and pleasant disposition, make her the perfect fit for our next Town Clerk", said Rotterdam Councilman Michael Della Villa in a written statement.
