ROTTERDAM Two join supervisor race as one drops out Candidates complain about high business taxes BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter Reach Gazette reporter Justin Mason at 395-3113 or jmason@dailygazette.net.
Two in and one out. Business owner Frank Del Gallo and Duanesburg Central School District teacher Brian McGarry both announced they’ll run for the Rotterdam supervisor’s seat. At the same time, Democrat Richard Leet has decided he won’t run for the position, which is occupied by two-term Republican Steve Tommasone. Del Gallo, the owner of Del Gallo Country Pools and an independent, will take the place of Leet on the Democratic ticket. The political newcomer said he’s basing his campaign on lowering the taxes that have a stranglehold on his business. “The taxes got so high I needed another job,” he said Thursday. “I figure if I do another job, it might as well be supervisor.” Del Gallo admits he’s not much of a politician, but considers himself a savvy enough businessman to run the town’s affairs. He said years of political bickering had left Rotterdam in bad shape tax-wise. “So I thought maybe I’d give it a crack,” he said. “I can’t do any worse than they’re doing.” McGarry, a registered Conservative, plans to wage a primary against Tommasone, who received the party’s endorsement earlier this month. For Town Board, the party also backed former board member Robert Godlewski and political newcomer Matt Martin, who are both Democrats, as well as conservative Nicola DiLeva . McGarry said he was motivated to run because of the increasing tax burden in Rotterdam. He was critical of Tommasone’s support for the creation of an ambulance district to fund the Rotterdam Emergency Medical Services Inc. “Personally I like Steve, but that doesn’t cut it when it comes to spending and accountability to the taxpayers,” he said. “That’s why I’m running for offi ce.” McGarry acknowledged he has an uphill battle to win the supervisor’s seat. But he said his candidacy should serve as a rallying cry for the town’s true fiscal conservatives and small businesses that are suffering from the high rate of taxes. “Small businesses are critical to the fiscal well-being of the town. We need them more than they need us.”
Wake up before it is too late, people. They want the whole enchilada to go in lockstep. There will be ONE PARTY in this county next year onward if you keep this up. One party. It will be the end of the two party system forevermore, and this is the d**e which we press our fingers into. Put your petty grievances aside.

It's not the party....it's the power grab by those who rub elbows with the lawyer/legislators/politicos.......I have begun to see that either party and their platforms are the same sh*t different day speeches.....only the semantics make them sound different......does anyone else hear the boots?......
the polar opposites do nothing to keep freedom......just look at the NYS senate......this could only be possible if the skirt is about to go up....... they all eat at the same tables, bed with the same hookers and count the same $$...............................

I understand your frustration well- then just have one party, and let them control the media, healthcare, banking, the auto industry and others, and then there will be no one to oppose them. As a matter of fact, they will probably control this forum too. 1917, 1933, 2009. Fine, if you want that, what's the differnce?

You're misunderstanding what I am saying.....I dont want one party.....I want both parties sheered like a sheep..... how many in these parties have been there FOR YEARS......they are 'beholden' to their party motto yet, dip into the trough together.....

And what's the alternative? Why doesn't the opposing parties get it together and offer the electorate a better platform? I for one do not relish a one party system. It isn't even American or in the country's best interest. We the people have no choice but to vote for one of these silly candidates endorsed by political parties. (or cross endorsed) It is a circus at best! We, who are disgruntled with the dems and cons have been waiting patiently for the reps to get it together and present a platform for change. Well.....we are still waiting! Would I vote for a dem or any dem endorsement? NO!!
So who does that leave us in this particular race....McGarry! Who by the way is a great guy with a vision! Not the same old same old! How can these 'non endorsed' people come up with fresh ideas and yet an entire party can not?

See, I firmly believe this is what the Democrats/Liberals WANT us to be doing - fighting amongst ourselves.
Congratulations, you're all falling right into their lair.
Who is fighting amongst themselves?.....dont worry,,,,the Dems will be brought to task after the storehouses run out of the power to 'purchase votes'.......the demonizing of those there capitalists will bite them in the a**.....soon enough the sheeple in their pasture will realize that Ms.Pelosi, Mr.Obama and the rest of the martha's vineyard crew, ARE JUST AS ELITEST as the leaders of the repubs......they just have to look up.....and they will learn that the straw for the bricks is of substandard quality......and the 'feed' is ground up fellow sheeple.......

Brian McGarry, Brad Littlefield, Michael O'Conner and John Mertz apparently represent fiscal restraint and accountability. They all appear focused and have an 'actual platform'. What a concept, huh? VOTE AND SUPPORT THEM ALL!!!

Bumble ~ maybe McGarry/Littlefield/O'Connor trifecta, and I'll agree that Mertz wins the primary ~ but I have a feeling Mertz will be part of the block that gets rejected for a bloody primary that voters won't forget in the general. It may depend on who goes for the two year term, but I don't see any of the sitting GOP getting re-elected.... they will no doubt eat each other up.
Political and social views As a member of the Roman Catholic faith, Calderón opposes abortion, euthanasia, and gay marriage.[5] His proposed economic policies are liberal; he supports balanced fiscal policies, flat taxes, lower taxes,[6][7][8] and free trade.
Calderón has also stated that the challenge is not between the political left or right, but a choice between "the past and the future." In this interpretation, moving toward "the past" would mean nationalization, expropriation, state control of the economy, and authoritarianism, while "the future" would represent the contrary: privatization, liberalization, market control of the economy, and political freedom.[9]

The beauty of this is that Rotterdam Republicans will have a voice in determining who will run in the general election on their party line. The decision will be made by the residents, not by the party bosses. By my count, there are presently five announced candidates from which to choose:
Marcinkowski Mertz O'Connor Signore Suhrada
There are three seats available including the 2 years remaining of Silva's term in office. So, which three of the five will be elected in the primary? Isn't democracy great?
And, now, back to the topic of this thread. According to the Daily Gazette, there are three announced candidates for Town Supervisor
Del Gallo Tommasone McGarry
This race could blow wide open, particularly if McGarry can win the Conservative primary and/or if the Conservative party rescinds their endorsement that was awarded to Tommasone. Any chance that could occur?
