With a resolution passed by the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors, Saratoga County residents will be able to buy prescription drugs at a discounted price.
The county will participate in a program provided by Pro-Act, a pharmacy benefit management company, at no cost to the county or residents.
"By participating in Pro-Act, our county can provide reduced medicine costs for residents of Saratoga County who struggle to afford necessary medicines and make ends meet," said Supervisor Joanne Yepsen.
Yepsen introduced the concept through the Public Health Committee last month and the resolution was passed on Tuesday, March 17.
The program became available by a deal that was struck between Pro-Act and private pharmacies. Currently there are 13 other counties in New York that are participating in the program.
Membership cards will be mailed to residents within the next two to four months, Yepsen said, and there are no limitations as to who is eligible.
"This will really benefit the uninsured and the underinsured," she added. "The percent off of prescription prices will be a direct result of what a customer is paying out of pocket."
If residents do not receive a card, they can call the Supervisors' office that will have extra discount cards on hand. There is no enrollment necessary other than having a mailing address within Saratoga County. Participants must simply show the card at the time of purchase of pharmaceutical drugs.
"It doesn't matter if residents own property or are renting within the county," Yepsen said. "If you live here you can benefit from this program."
Customers will be given the opportunity to receive 10 to 20 percent off brand name drugs and 20 to 40 percent off generic drugs.
Other benefits include:
-Any resident of the county, regardless of age, can participate in the discount program -There is no cost to the county and no cost to participants -The best results will occur for the uninsured and underinsured -The discount card that residents will receive by mail can be used at any pharmacy in the area and nationwide -The discount card program covers all prescription medications--brand name or generic. -Prescriptions for pets are covered.
