In-law apartment tax exemption a great idea

Mike Viscusi’s proposal [in Rotterdam] of having a tax exemption for “in-law apartments” is a fantastic and humanitarian idea.
The tough economic times have seen a flood of foreclosures. Being forced to choose between food, heat, prescriptions or taxes has forced some elderly people to jeopardize their health. The daily cost of a nursing/assisted living facility can average $100-plus.
In addition to just keeping the tax collector away, the upkeep of an older home is a monumental burden on someone in their 70s or 80s. Many face these obstacles alone. Resigning themselves to the fact that they just can’t stay in their homes is depressing and in some cases humiliating.
A family that welcomes an elderly relative into their home, where they can have security, love and a relief of financial burdens, should be compensated with a tax exemption for a separate apartment.
Mr. Viscusi states that he himself is not someone who could make use of this exemption. How refreshing — someone who is thinking of others and does not have a “what’s in it for me” mentality. His idea of an in-law apartment tax exemption should be considered in other municipalities.

instead of being enablers we should teach how to stay in our homes......not sit back and wait for some legislation to 'save us'.........and maybe it's
high time society stop stigmatizing the elderly......"oh dear, they've had to leave their home."......guess what....having a home is a burden when you are
young, working and raising kids......so I'm not so sure that foundation of 'chasing the $$' is such a great one........again, a generation that has left
and is leaving those institutions that are there to instill caring, love, respect, selflessness etc is where we are now......so,,,,where is the straw for the
bricks,,,what kind of foundation are we building?????

Why don't politicians focus on ways to reduce government spending thereby reducing the property taxes of all property owners, rather than finding ways to shift the tax burden between various demographic groups?  Rather than redistribution of wealth and the creation of tax exemptions and tax shelters for various groups of people, we should strive for limiting the size and cost of government.  Sorry folks, IMHO, this is window dressing for a known planned run for political office.

Stop pandering, Mr. Viscusi, and give us your ideas (and not that of others) for government reform.  If you are elected, how will you create permanent and high paying jobs for the residents of Schenectady County.  What will you do to reduce the oppressive property taxes?  How will you ensure that the people of Schenectady County District 4 get their fair share of sales tax and property tax revenues?  What is your position re: the Glendale Home, the Metroplex, police department consolidation, taxpayer funding for not-for-profits, etc.?

And, as a resident of the Town of Duanesburg, what can I expect of you in terms of representation for residents of the rural western portion of Schenectady County?  Will you meet with the Town Supervisors and Town Board members to learn of their issues and concerns?

If you want the support of voters, you and your opponents will have to provide clear and concise answers to the difficult questions pertaining to the challenges faced by Schenectady County.  There will be no pass for candidates in this years elections.

Mr. Viscusi appears to be following in the footsteps of the dems. Right along with Ang. They propose 'feel good' legislation. Just like Amedore sponsoring an event at the gun club here in Rotterdam for breast cancer. Is it a good cause? Of course it is. No one will  argue that one. But is that the governments job? Has that become the role of our elected officials?

Lets get down to the people's business. Give everyone a tax break...not just the people who 'report' that they have an in-law apt. And let's leave breast cancer to the family, friends, healthcare workers, volunteers, religious organizations and the cancer society. GET BACK TO THE BUSINESS THAT WE ELECTED YOU TO DO.

I don't think Amedore is doing it with anything else but his personal time as a citizen, to engage in a charitable endeavor like that. I don't think tax payer funds are going towards it, unless I am mistaken.

I'm sure you are correct. I know that he will be on WGY's Don Weeks show tomorrow to promote it.

Tax incentive for housing elderly friend or relative?

As our county legislators continue to plan on a replacement of Glendale Home with 200 beds, and Ellis enlarges its nursing home facilities, I wonder if this will meet the needs of our expanding aging population.
How about tax and assessment breaks for taking in an elderly friend or family member with some adaptations to facilities, or adding on a special room that meets building codes and handicapped needs? This would not become a rental unit with limited storage and food prep area, grab bars and short distances from bed, chair and handicapped bath facilities. Financial aid could be offered similar to cases where grandparents are raising grandchildren. It may not be independent living, but it beats the isolation and cost of an adult or nursing home!
Churches, organizations, and enterprising businesses could set up support systems for caregivers like home hair care, limited grocery deliveries, and restaurants could package their surpluses for next-day microwave reheating for one, or a whole family with arranged pick-up and pricing.
Aging can’t be put on hold while politicians figure our vote-getting solutions! I’m a patient 85 years old, but my mobility has limited waiting!

Tru Dat Ms.Schmid....but NYS doesn't like seniors.....and only as babysitters will the state like them........
the kids in the middle are working to live in NYS.......however, if one has a goal to 'take care' this way it will and can be met....
Extended familys and women at home......no women's lib......

Sorry...but I disagree. You can't expel one group from paying taxes while the others pick up the tab. NYS already offers 'family leave' for those who need it. You can also claim seniors or whomever you take care of on your taxes as a deduction. It isn't about the money as much as it is about 'if you can'.

There is the office of the aging, senior centers, the eddy, catholic charities AND family!!!
