Fire chief: Arson to blame for Schenectady blaze

By DAVID FILKINS, Staff writer
Last updated: 11:22 a.m., Saturday, March 14, 2009

SCHENECTADY — A Catholic Charities office was damaged by fire early this morning.

City Fire Chief Bob Farstad said the blaze began at 4:15 a.m. when someone set fire to a shed just outside the building at 818 Union St.

No one was in the building at the time and no firefighters were injured. Farstad said the attic sustained significant damage and the rest of the building sustained smoke and water damage. The building will be closed temporarily.

No one has been charged in the incident...................http://timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=779840

Nice huh? A city so safe that even the non-profits are being targeted.

Catholic Charities should take a leaf from the tree of horrible Bethesda House. Apply for Metrograft funding. Since Metrograft refuses to fulfill any job function let them fed the hungry. There are too many County sheeple eating pet food so they can live in "beautiful Schenectady County" and pay record Krat property taxes.

It is more of a welfare group then anything Catholic from what I have seen.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

so that makes it right?

Obviously you've never had to use their services - helping people get the assistance they need is just ONE of the charitable functions they serve.

well I remember Suzi Savage practically running it a few years back, so I am not sure what to make of this so called "catholic" group. But arson is CERTAINLY wrong no matter where it is committed!

Catholic Charities is just an arm of the county welfare system with a religious name. I know this for a fact. My friends mother received benefits from them. Believe me.....it is tax paid welfare social program! It just sounds better..doesn't it.

However, I am not condoning the arson. That is horrific no matter what.

Savage was on the board in 2006-2007

they provide some nice services to seniors - at nice expense to governments or taxpayers

would obvisouly like to see them be more self sufficient, or raise more private money instead of taking over 2 million from government...

Interestingly, campaign financial disclosures showed donations made by Catholic Charities to many local politicians (of both major parties) and political parties.  I understand that the entries on these reports, that were available at the NYS Board of Elections website last summer, were removed in amended filings after someone inquired of the Schenectady Board of Elections about the appropriatness/legality of not-for-profits donating to political campaigns.

I executed a search this evening on the NYS BOE web site.  The results now show only a single donation made by the organization in 2006 to the Saratoga Springs Democratic Committee (see web page at URL below).

Not-for-profits being given public revenues by our elected representatives in exchange for donations back to the politicians campaign accounts.  There are several members of this forum who saw the entries before they were removed.

Before these donations are "amended", have a look at the web page at the link below to see which candidates/political parties another not-for-profit (Northeast Parent & Child) donated to.  You may want to print out a copy before the entries are removed.

I believe that this charity also receives public money.  If, indeed, the Northeast Parent & Child Society is registered as a not-for-profit, doesn't endorsing a candidate or making a donation to a candidate violate the regulations governing not-for-profit organizations?
