Hope they recover.  I heard a helicopter going over our house and that sound always takes me back to living in Schenectady (city) when our daughter was sick and she awoke at odd hours of the night, we were awake hearing several helicopters around 4 in the morning, it was the biggest drug raid the city ever had.

Anyone live around there?

I called someone who works in the park. They said they saw the emergency vehicles entering, but doesn't know what happened.

Maybe Mr.Galesi would like to pay for a private ambulance and fire squad in the park......there's some jobs......

I think you're thinking of  a local prominent banquet house near curry/altamont.  Wasn't there something a few years ago about the Industrial Park being hooked to the town sewer lines illegally?  Maybe I'm mistaken, but I thought it had to do with the Papa John's place in the park

Two workers burned in Rotterdam

ROTTERDAM — Two New York Rubber Recycling employees were flown to Westchester Burn Unit with severe burns on their hands and faces after an electrical explosion Saturday morning.
The two were replacing a circuit breaker when an electrical panel exploded before 7:30 a.m. at the Rotterdam Industrial Park, said John Nuzback, Schenectady County acting emergency management director. Police determined the explosion was accidental.
The burns are considered serious because the employees’ hands were involved, Nuzback said. Both men were breathing and talking at the scene before they were taken to the hospital, he said.
Police have not released their names.
South Schenectady Fire Department responded to Building 14, and the victims were treated at the scene by Rotterdam paramedics, Rotterdam Ambulance Service and Mohawk Ambulance Service.
No one answered the phone at New York Rubber Recycling Saturday afternoon.

A friend of mine just suggested theres liable to be some issues with this because they weren't electricians and working outside OSHA guidelines ... guess we'll have to wait and hear "The rest of the story"

I commend the emergency personnel who responded to both this incident and the fire in the City of Schenectady yesterday.  The Rotterdam Industrial park incident was responded to by the So. Schenectady Fire Department, REMS, Mohawk Ambulance, the Town of Rotterdam paramedics and, I believe, the NYS Police who evacuated the injured by helicopter.  I understand that four fire departments worked to save those in the peril and extinguish the fire on Grove (?) St.

Working together does work and it occurs regularly ... not, however, in county politics.

OSHA launches probe after explosion
BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter
Reach Gazette reporter Justin Mason at 395-3113 or jmason@dailygazette.net.

Federal authorities are investigating after an electrical explosion seriously injured two employees of a company in the Rotterdam Corporate Park.
Officials from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration launched a probe of New York Rubber Recycling Monday after learning of the explosion from media reports. The investigation is the third by OSHA into the company since 2006 and the second following a fire emergency at the facility in Building 14.
Fire officials said the explosion occurred early Saturday morning when two workers attempted to replace a circuit breaker. The victims were flown to the Westchester Medical Center Hospital with injuries that were described as severe burns to their hands and faces.
“It was determined to be accidental,” said Rotterdam Police Department Lt. Michael Brown, who declined to identify the workers and was unsure of their respective conditions Monday.
New York Rubber Recycling makes a variety of products by freezing scrap tires and then smashing them into pieces of various shapes and sizes. The recycled rubber is used as a wood mulch substitute for playground surfaces and as a base for sports fields.
South Schenectady Fire Chief Michael France alerted the town’s building inspector because of the frequency of calls to Building 14 that have brought out both his company and the Pine Grove Fire Department, which primarily covers the corporate park. He could recall about half-dozen incidents that have drawn both departments to the company over the past several years.
“We’ve been there numerous times,” he said. “It’s kind of a concern.”
New York Rubber Recycling has received a total of 12 citations of varied severity and a combined $6,225 in fines stemming from the previous two visits by OSHA. Violations included an unmarked doorway, unguarded belts, machines that were not properly grounded and electrical extension cords that were not visually inspected for defects.
The explosion and subsequent investigation come less than two months after PermaLife Products, the New Jersey-based parent company of New York Rubber Recycling, filed for bankruptcy protection. PermaLife is listed as having $2.77 million in assets and $21.1 million worth of debt, according to the Chapter 11 filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New Jersey.
In 2005, the company began a $1.4 million expansion at its Rotterdam facility aimed at increasing the number of tires it recycles annually from 2.5 million to 4 million. The project was partially funded by a $500,000 state Environmental Investment Program grant through Empire State Development.
The company made news in June 2007 after a fire ignited inside a machine hopper and then spread into a large collector. Firefighters from South Schenectady and Pine Grove spent several hours dousing the stubborn blaze.
Three months later, a small fire started in the warehouse after a Bobcat overturned on a large pile of shredded rubber and spilled oil. Though not considered serious, the fire drew a response from seven area fire agencies.
Rotterdam Building Inspector Mickey Maher could not be reached for comment Monday. Attempts to contact company representatives from both PermaLife Products and New York Rubber Recycling were unsuccessful.
The company plans to continue leasing the facility while it goes through the bankruptcy process, said David Buicko, the chief operating officer for Galesi Group, which..................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....amp;EntityId=Ar01003

Rubber recycler hit with more safety fi nes
OSHA action follows injuries from electric blast in March

BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter
Reach Gazette reporter Justin Mason at 395-3113 or jmason@dailygazette.net.

Federal authorities have again fined New York Rubber Recycling LLC for failing to have proper safety procedures at its Building 14 plant in the Rotterdam Corporate Park.
Last week, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration assessed the company fines of $14,600 for six violations, including five that are considered serious. The company has until next month to either contest the findings or negotiate elements of them.
“Those are pretty much their two options,” said Terri Harding, a safety supervisor with OSHA’s Albany office.
A supervisor at the Rotterdam plant referred a call for comment to PermaLife Products, the New Jersey-based parent company. PermaLife Managing Director Nicholas Meonna did not return a call for comment Thursday afternoon.
OSHA began investigating the company in March after two workers were seriously injured in an electrical explosion. The workers were attempting to replace a circuit breaker when the blast occurred, burning their hands and faces.
The investigation found that the two injured workers, whom Harding declined to identify, were installing a 150-amp breaker without shutting off the panel box. OSHA found both maintenance employees and supervisors at the plant had not been trained in safety.
Other findings included a cover being left off a main power panel, exposing workers to live electrical parts. Also, a worker was found using an ungrounded extension cord, according to the citation.
OSHA determined the workers attempting to change the breaker were not qualified to do so. The company also failed to keep adequate logs of work-related injuries in 2007 and 2008.
The most recent citations come on top of a dozen others that were levied on New York Rubber Recycling since 2006. Past violations included an unmarked doorway, unguarded belts, machines that were not properly grounded and electrical extension cords that were not inspected for defects.

Susan E. Savage, Chair of the Schenectady County Legislature said, "This project is another example of our smart growth economic development program. We are using State grant funding to help a leading recycling company expand and create new jobs."

Ya, they're creating new jobs. Doing a great job of replacing the ones left open by workers injured on the jobs.

Oh, did I mention they received $500,000 from our coffers (ala Metroplex) in October 2005 ?
