Rotterdam GOP committee: Surhada in, Mertz out Tuesday, February 10, 2009 By Justin Mason (Contact) Gazette Reporter
ROTTERDAM — Rotterdam's Republican Committee unanimously picked Schenectady County Legislator Joe Surhada to replace Town Board member John Mertz, whose political future is now in question. By running for the board, Surhada announced he will not seek re-election to the legislature next fall. County Republican Chairman Tom Buchanan said his committee is now interviewing candidates for Surhada's seat, but Mertz is not among the candidates that have indicated interest in running. "We're interviewing candidates as we speak," he said this morning. "[Mertz] has not indicated a desire to run." In another move, the town GOP's executive committee also tabbed Stanley Marchinkowski to fill Democrat John Silva's seat for the rest of the year. Marchinkowski, a first-year member of the Zoning Board of Appeals, received the committee's endorsement to run for the remaining two years of Silva's term in November. Incumbent Supervisor Steve Tommasone and board member Joe Signore were also endorsed for another run. In a surprise move last fall, town committee Chairman Gerard Parisi announced the party would drop Mertz due to his "controversial actions" and inability to work effectively with other departments in Rotterdam. Town party leaders initially balked at......................http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2009/feb/10/0210_Surhada/

Suhrada support
Marv Cermak
Word has it Rotterdam Republicans are going to endorse Joe Suhrada to run for the Town Board in the fall election. This is an unusual twist because Suhrada has been a Schenectady County legislator the past eight years.
GOP insiders said Suhrada is moving because he's frustrated with lopsided Deocratic majority control of the legislature.
It's no secret he's atop the Democrats' enemies' list. He's the most vocal of the four member GOP minority on the 15-member board and has privately said he believes legislature's Democratic bosses — elected and appointed — are small-minded, petty people.
He's told friends that the Democrats have chosen all the other GOP legislators to lead the body in the Pledge of Allegiance before each meeting. He has been bypassed for the tradition ever since the Democrats took control of the legislature five years ago. That sounds pretty petty.

I'm speechless. Without opposition, Suzie will continue her reign as Queen B and I don't see anyone poised to take any kind of lead in the County - guess it's going to be a dem led majority for years to come |

Joe will be missed by many thinking County residents. There's just so much anyone can take. Hopefully, they have some electable Reps over there that can fund a County race. Sounds like another big step back for the taxpayers, small business people and possibly a Dem sweep of all County seats. |

My guess is that Suhrada will run for Town Supervisor shortly after that. I dunno why I get that feeling, but it seems logical. |

Ousting Mr. Mertz is one thing, but shifting Mr. Surhada from the County to the Town seems odd to me. http://rotterdamny.blogspot.com/
Maybe a 'party jumper' for the vacant seat????? Conservative ready for the consolidation???? |

NO NEED FOR SPILLED MILK. LET'S HELP THE TOWNSPEOPLE GET BEHIND THOSE WHO HAVE THE EXPERIENCE, STAMINA, INTELLIGENCE, AND DESIRE TO SERVE - LIKE THOSE WHO ARE THERE INCLUDING SUGARODA AND MARCHINCOSKI. IF WE BEAT UP ON THE GUYS IN THERE NOW, AND THE ONES WHO ARE RUNNING WITH THEM, IT WON'T HELP US KEEP THE TOWN MOVING AHEAD. THEY'RE ON THE RIGHT PATH. TALK WITH THEM RATHER THAN ATTACK THEM. IF THEY DON'T ACT REASONABLY THEN ATTACK. LOOK AT WHAT WE'VE GOT ON THE STATE AND FED LEVELS! AT LEAST THEY'RE TAKING CARE OF OUR TOWN AND NOT TALKING ABOUT STIMULUS MONEY FOR A MOB MUSEUM...RIGHT SAL!? MAYBE PDQ HAS SOME LEFT OVER MONEY FROM HIS GAMBLING DAYS AS A BOOKIE ON STATE TIME OR FROM THE CONVICTSTINO DAYS HE'D LIKE TO SHARE TO 'STIMULATE' THE TOWN...OH YEAH...PDQMACEJKA ALREADY STIMULATED THE TOWN WITH A LOUSY JOB ON THE REVAL....LET'S GET BEHIND THE RIGHT TEAM IN NOVEMBER AND CHANGE THE COUNTY, APPLY PRESSURE WHERE NECESSARY AND KEEP THE TOWN AS IS. |

My guess would be that they didn't think Suhrada could win if he ran for the county leg seat again. Also there doesn't seem to be many options out there....for either party actually. They just seem to recycle the same ones. And perhaps they are looking to Viscusi for the run for County leg. |
