Rotterdam cop emerges as candidate for sheriff

By Michael Lamendola (Contact)
Gazette Reporter

SCHENECTADY — A Rotterdam police lieutenant and son of a prominent Democratic county legislator has expressed interested in becoming Schenectady County sheriff.
Dominick Dagostino has told county Democrats he wants to be sheriff. The announcement has apparently put Tom Constantine’s bid for the position on hold.
Constantine, the Democrat’s initial choice for the position, confirmed Dagostino has come forward for the position. Constantine said he still remains interested in the position. He changed his party affiliation in late December from Republican to Democrat to boost his chances of obtaining the seat.
Dagostino is a conservative, and the sheriff’s position is currently held by Harry Buffardi, a Democrat. Buffardi plans to retire sometime this year and will begin teaching full time at Schenectady County Community College on Monday.
Dagostino is the son of Judy Dagostino, a Democratic county legislator representing District 4 on the county Legislature. She is vice chairwoman, ...............http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2009/jan/06/0106_sheriff/

Gee it's a good thing that Constantine switched parties only to be shafted by the Dems. Dominick is politically connected thru the police run Conservative Party and his mother Judy who's on the county board and is a Dem so Dom should be a shoe-in IMHO.

Who didn't see this coming?  First Kennedy, then Dagastino.  I'm certain that there will be an extensive vetting of the candidates.

Nothing political goin' on here, huh? Funny though....I thought it was the cops who were against the Sheriffs dept cause theycost the taxpayer's so much money. Didn't they think it was just a duplication of services? Well, guess if ya can't beat them....ya join 'm. Or perhaps just a change of heart.

This is becoming almost as much fun as watching the goings on in Washington these days! IMHO

Yea Bum, the cops want to abolish the Sheriff's department.......  Maybe that is the platform- abolish the Sheriff's department so then the cops don't have to transport the
criminals to the jail- they can just let them go, because then there's no Sheriff's department to take prisoners.  Yea, abolish the Sheriff's department- great idea!  Just let the
prisoners run free...

Dominick Dagostino has told county Democrats he wants to be sheriff. The announcement has apparently put Tom Constantine’s bid for the position on hold.

Also interested in the position is Joe Lazzari, who retired from the Schenectady Police Department in 2004 after 26 years. He lost a close contest in the 1998 race for Schenectady County sheriff against Democrat Harry Buffardi.

Lazzari said today he will run for sheriff and is seeking support from county Republicans. Lazzari was a Republican who switched to the Independence Party last September.

“It has been something on my mind and the opportunity arose. I love law enforcement. I miss it deeply,” Lazzari said.

Circus is the right word. Constantine made a big mistake switching parties. Nobody likes that. Hopefully this means a real primary on the Krat side.

Was hoping one of Rotterdam's finest would emerge on the GOP side. Still plenty of time? Joe Lazzari is better than running someone who got buried in the last election. Lazzari could win, especially after a bloody Krat battle.

I agree that Constantine may have made a costly decision to switch his party affiliation.  Lazzari reportedly also changed parties from Republican to Independent some time back.  If I had input to the Republican endorsement, I would have a difficult time supporting any of the announced candidates
due to their perceived lack of loyalty to the party.  They may be good men and well qualified for the position, but their integrity and commitment to party values would be of concern to me.

I am looking forward to spirited primaries for the endorsements of several political parties.

It appears that the dems will welcome 'anyone' into their fold. It is clearly about power and position than it is about public service to the taxpayers they represent. And on a larger scale, it is appearing to become the norm with all of the political parties.

This whole 'I want Buffardi's job' is nothing more than political positioning. They all appear shallow at best. There is not a ONE that would get my vote for the job. NOT ONE!!

Wake up sheople! IMHO

Bum:

Who would you like to see run for the position?  Who would be worthy of your vote?  How well do you know the three prospective candidates?
