The Auxiliary of the Rotterdam Fire District 7 (Schonowe) held a public “Meet the candidates for commissioner night” on Dec. 3. Unfortunately, only the incumbent commissioner was in attendance to discuss his position with community residents on issues before the district. It was unfortunate that the candidate from the “Concerned Citizens of Schonowe” committee was unable to attend or, when asked, to provide an alternate night that he could attend. By refusing to schedule a time to discuss his position in an open public forum, he speaks loudly to the public of his real intentions as a candidate. As the incumbent commissioner, I believe in any contested election the voters should be able to hear a discussion of issues and positions of the candidates in order to make an informed decision before they cast their vote. It has been well demonstrated in this campaign by the actions taken with flyers of accusations and door-to-door spinning of unsubstantiated facts that my opponent and his campaign manager believe it is best to provide the public with their perceived reality in a closed forum and to allow no discussions.
