Mass. company to build $3M facility in Schenectady Wednesday, July 30, 2008
SCHENECTADY — Griffin Greenhouse & Nursery Supplies of Massachusetts will build a $3 million, 27,000-square-foot distribution center at the site of the former Dorp Salvage on Broadway, officials announced today. The company leases a facility in Latham but will relocate those operations and 16 employees to the Schenectady site, which officials call Broadway Commerce Park. Construction is scheduled to begin in late August. The new facility will be built for Griffin by Highbridge Development, developer of the Broadway Commerce Park, an urban business park that is home to a number of professional office buildings and distribution facilities along the Broadway entrance to the city right off of Interstate 890. Griffin Greenhouse & Nursery Supplies is headquartered in Tewksbury, Mass. It operates 12 distribution centers in nine states, including Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Tennessee, New York and New Jersey.

A wholesale greenhouse and nursery supply company will build a $3 million distribution center in Schenectady, officials said today.
Griffin Greenhouse & Nursery Supplies will build the 27,000-square-foot facility at the Broadway Commerce Park downtown, near Interstate 890.
Based in Tewksbury, Mass., the wholesaler currently leases space in Latham. Officials needed to expand and wanted to own a building. The company will move 16 jobs from Latham to Schenectady once the construction is finished.
Griffin Greenhouse & Nursery Supplies operates 12 distributions centers in Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Tennessee, New York and New Jersey.
Schenectady County was selected over a number of competing locations for the new warehouse, officials said.
"In deciding on this site we needed to give careful consideration to the effect it would have on our employees and customers," Chief Operating Officer Craig Hyslip said. "We chose Highbridge Development along with Schenectady to provide us the best outcome. We are looking forward to moving in this December."
The developer of the Broadway Commerce Park, Highbridge Development, will build the facility for Griffin Greenhouse.
Highbridge Development will pay the Metroplex Development Authority $150,000 for land needed for the project. The Metroplex, in turn, will provide a $125,000 facade grant to Highbridge Development.
The project will open up more sites for lease or purchase along Broadway, said John Roth, president of Highbridge Development.
More than 140,000 square feet of new and renovated space has been built on Broadway over the past four years, according to Susan Savage, chairwoman of the Schenectady County Legislature.

I have a few questions here....first, how much land is Highbridge Development aquiering for $150,000? Second, why does a brand new building get a $125,000 facade grant? Third, isn't that almost like Highbridge is really paying only $25,000 for the land. And fourth, all of this for a measly 16 jobs?
