They've got a "call before you dig" program, maybe they should require residents to take a "tree cutting 101" course before they try something like this ... sheesh.

Will the people cutting down the trees be held responsible for this? I mean the OT cost for National Grid will be up there for sure.

I saw National Grid working on some lines over at the Rotterdam / Schenectady border on Altamont Ave. earlier tonight.  They were right around Planet Fitness (who is having a sale, btw, only $10 / month now).

Thousands lose power when tree falls on wires

ROTTERDAM — Officials from National Grid said more than 4,000 households lost electricity for the evening Monday after a resident accidentally cut down a tree onto a cluster of power wires.
Spokesman Patrick Stella said the tree landed on wires along Hemlock Street in Rotterdam at 4:30 p.m. Service was disrupted for about 1,800 residents in Rotterdam and 2,200 in Schenectady.
Stella said crews were able to restore about half of the customers by the early evening. Power was expected to be restored to the remaining residents shortly before midnight.
