This was a quote from Joe Suhrada about churches closing in the city of Schenectady. It was on the Schenectadyny website.........
Quoted Text
Sounds like two Catholic churches are set to close soon. This is very sad. Forty two funerals and TWO baptisms!!! If that doesn't speak to what is happening to our once proud city, I don't know what does.
It is nice that Mr.Suhrada is concerned about what happens in the city of Schenectady. Then, perhaps, he should run for city council. Because right now he is Rotterdam's county legislature. I wonder if he knows how many, if any, churches have closed or consolidated with another in Rotterdam. He was elected, in part, by the people of Rotterdam to represent them. Now perhaps I am missing something, but where is Mr.Suhrada when it comes to Rotterdam? Is he looking for funding for the badly needed infrustructure in Rotterdam? Does he even know what is going on in Rotterdam? Does he ever attend Rotterdam meetings to see and hear what the people who elected him have to say?
Perhaps Mr.Suhrada is missing the mark and needs to come back to his elected roots and get back in touch with the towns he was elected to represent.

Only casually knowing OF joe shurada, doesn't he own Uncle Sams Candy? He's a city business - but he lives in the town of Rotterdam.
Is it possible he's concerned about both communities?

I would say that he's concerned about both. In fact, he does own Uncle Sam's Candies, which is over on Albany St. by Kings Road. He does represent the people of Rotterdam, Princetown and Duanesburg on the County Board, however, while he is sitting there, he is not ONLY there to consider things for the people in his district. In fact, he, as every legislator on that board, SHOULD be VERY concerned with things that go on with the city.
I don't remember who previously said this, so I won't give anyone the credit for it, however, someone did once say "As the city goes, so does the county." I think that anybody sitting on the county board should be hoping that the city does better, however, at the same time, they need to b working on the county as a whole for the most part. If things aren't going well in the city, then maybe we need to surround the city with things that are going well and sort of show the people of the city of Schenectady how to go about doing things well so they might take the hint and get some economic boom going WITHOUT the funds of the entire county (a.k.a. Metroplex and Schenectady County's high burden of taxes).
People are not one-dimensional. As a city business owner, he obviously has views on Schenectady...as even YOU have expressed an opinion or various topics where perhaps you are not even a resident. I'm sure you see the point I'm making.
By the way, I have often seen him at Rotterdam Town Board meetings. I've always been confident he knows what's going on in Rotterdam as well as any other elected representative. I'll leave the question of whether his performance is adequate enough to others.
The bar needs to be set for the ENTIRE county.....the city being the center of the wheel....the rim and spokes on which it spins are the towns and villages around......the bar set is not just bars, movie theaters, restaurants etc......Rotterdam as far as I can tell is doing a poor job with it's 'city borders' if you will..........dont shirk or shrink away.....stand and hold the bar.......it doesn't take a metroplex to make a 'bar standard'........

So what if the guy pays attention to things that are over the town line? I care about what is going on over there too since all you have to do is see the kind of bums that are crossing into the town from Crane Street, and Altamont avenue. The whole place is in collapse-tabacco road. Drive down State street sometimes from Downtown up to woodlawn and see what happened. Look at Broadway and Guilderland Avenue too. Do you want Rotterdam to start looking like that? All rundown? Joe S. gets around all over the place, town, county, whatever. He pays attention to things all over, thats why we pay him.
