Rotterdam to study town raises

ROTTERDAM — Town Supervisor Steve Tommasone will appoint a five-member committee this month to study salary raises for elected and appointed town officials.
Without discussion, four of five board members supported creating the committee during Wednesday's Town Board meeting. John Silva was absent.
Tommasone said the committee will be charged with studying the salaries of all officials in relation to similar towns. He intends to appoint residents and small business owners to the panel, which will report to the board in March.

I'm still waiting to hear more on this.  I was hoping that it would cover more than just the raises, but I guess not.  Thing is, being there last night, it was amazing to see how little Joe Signore and John Mertz had to say about ANYTHING.

There is turmoil among the members of the Town Board, some members aren't talking to other members of the Town Board over issues concerning the way things are being handled and money that is being spent.

From what I heard (just got a call from a reporter), the town board is going to be looking into this more, getting ideas from the community, starting a Community Committee.  I'll leave you hanging there since I don't have much more information, other than I was asked if I would be interested in serving on such a board, since my name was brought up during the meeting.  There was also another name that was brought up, but I don't feel I should release that name, as hearsay.

Just wanted to let you know, and also, FYI, the agenda meetings are no longer on Monday nights, for anybody that was wondering.
Here's a link to the town schedule of everything going on.
http://www.rotterdamny.org/calendar1/calendar.asp

Town board meetings are the 2nd and 4th Wednesday nights of each month, with the agenda meetings being held on the THURSDAY prior to the meeting.  So, for next Wednesday's meeting (1/23), the agenda meeting was last night.

Now, the following is a guess on things going on with this board, as I have had no conversation with anyone from the Town Board regarding this.  I would figure that the first thing that is going to be considered is the possibility of raises for the board.  Second, I would hope that this is NOT going to be a one-issue committee.  I an hoping that it is something that the town will continue to use in the future, whether I am officially asked to be on it (and whether I accept the position of sitting on it) or not.

BTW, I did find that schedule above, but I still can't find the agendas.  Can someone please post a link to the agendas on the town website?  The link I'm finding is still last years and does not even include the last 2 board meetings (1/1 and 1/9).
Thanks.

Well if they then clearly had nothing to contribute to the goings on in Rotterdam, then they sure as heck don't need a raise for work performed. That is what I mean about self serving. They are there to do a job...PERIOD! They are servants to the community. If they continue their pouting, and refuse to enter into dialog for the betterment of this community, than they shouldn't be on the board.

The reps are in a dysfunctional mode right now. They certainly don't need a division now.

Remember, it's not about the raise...it is how it was implemented. Just slip it in the next years budget like they did the new assessors raise.

And Kevin, have they approached you yet for this 'raise study'? Just be careful on what you decide!

We should just set up our own committee.....for ANYTHING....the Coffee Club Committee....Is that what Brad called it before?---If enough of us get together(I'm gonna use Michael's essay here,he had summed it up on the old forum board).... it could be multi-pronged----kind of like a fondue......each with their own purpose....each person their own prong to follow government committees.....the biggest prong needs to be the people mover, like a bellows for a fire......

I just read in the Rotterdam Spotlight that so far 2 people are being considered to be on the Community Committee to study the pay raises for the Town Board[ Diane Marco and Kevin March]. It appears that the deck is being stacked so watch out Kevin as we all know that Diane Marco was one of the board members at the time that pushed for this raise in the first place. There is nothing wrong with giving the Town Board a raise and I know that they deserve it but it has to be done the proper way using the proper procedures.

I agree Shadow.  I haven't had a chance to read the spotlight, but that was the paper that contacted me and Ms. Marco is the other name that was mentioned to me, by that newspaper specifically.

Still waiting to see what's going to happen.
