Voters have power to impose term limits
JIM RAMSEY Schenectady

Yes, Schenectady County Legislator Ed Kosiur lost his bid to replace state Legislator Paul Tonko. However, consider what he has gained.
He did not have to give up his ability to think and act independently, which implies he did not have to give up his soul for a servile job. He will have over a year to reconsider if he should run again for this job. He will be able to do more good for society in his current vocation than being a pawn in the state Assembly. As to the myth that voters don’t like how our state Legislature functions, but think their local representatives are OK: Consider the case of the people of Schenectady in their quest for an honest police department. All three of our local representatives (Sen. Hugh Farley, Assemblyman Jim Tedisco, and then-Assemblyman Paul Tonko) voted for the continuation of arbitration in police matters. Thanks to Gov. Spitzer’s veto [Aug. 2 Gazette], Public Safety Commissioner Wayne Bennett can now discipline as required in order to reshape the police department from a negative to a positive entity.
So what can we do? Vote against all incumbents with more than five to 10 years service. This is our only termlimit option against a job that was never meant to become open-ended.

Th3e only way there will ever be term limits is if it goes to a referendum vote by the people. The politicians will never vote themselves out of a job.

No, but WE can!

I believe that it is not good to have anyone in office for an extended period of time. I really don't know what the limits should be for local or state positions, but I never thought that it was a good idea for people to have an actual career in politics. I will always try to vote the new person in, if I think that they are good. Of course there are some exceptions.

I think that a 2 term limit would be fair, just like it is for the president.

I agree...2-3terms....first term to 'make your point'....2nd term to get the team.....3rd term to execute it......then-----YOU'RE  OUTA THERE.....

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

Sounds plausible, but you also have to think about this from a different level.  Remember, a seat in the House of Representatives in Washington D.C. is only for 2 years.  3 terms gives them 6 years.  6 years is also the length of 1 term in the senate.  Should we mandate we need a new senator each and every term?  Or just once every 18 years?  Isn't that a little long?

Well...besides looking at the choices that we have to return there at this point, I just don't know if this is plausible.  Plus, after the first term, there's the name recognition.

it's a generation.....if you look at the voting age starting at 18-20years old...what is the definition of a generation?...look at the hippie generation if they could change the votes/seats that quick we would be at a different place.....what about the X-generation....Mr.Amedore is the very tip of that generation.....I'm not saying it is just generational, but, each is swayed by different experiences, trends, advertising, technology etc......

The balance is supposed to be kept with the constitutions of the local/states/federal governments---the 'reasons/foundations' are what we cant seem to find.....we sit around and 'guess' at what the founding fathers meanings were......

We need to rid the government of special interest $$groups and the thought that 'government can care for us'.........

The leaders need to be leaders......

Good point!

But if we had term limits, then the special intrest groups would have to work harder to sway the new ones. They wouldn't be so comfortable with the ones presently in office. Not much time to sell their goods.

Either that, or they would have to turn their idea of going after whoever's going to run earlier, therefore, turning away from the people that are actually in office.

Maybe even doubling their payments, those to the people that are in office, those that they want to get into office.

Well, the special interest groups would split. Half would have to sway the politician already in office. The other half would be donating to the politician of their choice's campaign. They would probably figure out a way by this.
