If recollection serves me right, Price Chopper/Golub Corp benefitted from Metroplex funding (i.e., government intervention) for the Freezer Building in the Rotterdam Industrial Park. To suggest that the company's success resulted only from competing in the free market is misleading .
Indeed, government intervention does often determine the winners and the losers in our capitalist system.
Actually, I hadn't taken into consideration the Freezer building may have had Metroplex funding, and this would not be surprising, considering the timing of this and Railex coming along at the same time. I, growing up in Rotterdam, remember it pre-Metroplex and remember everything going on at the Corporate location (west of the tracks) for years. I only stated that it was from the free market up until they started getting the money from the taxpayers through the Metroplex, which with this, I guess goes back at least to 2005. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I knew they were on the dole and didn't care about their neighbors, I guess I just didn't know how long. I wonder how that one family living on Duanesburg Road likes that new fence.
WTH are you talking about???? I guess you don't know anyone who works at either place, do you? OMG!! Who and where did you 'ever' get this false information????
It has been reported on the major tv networks and in other sources -- tomatoes that are grown in the large commercial operations in other states - Florida and California - in particular (and which make up the majority of our out of season tomato availability -- are picked green, stored green and then "gassed" to turn red just before they are delivered to markets around the country.
IT IS A FACT -- and that is why I will only purchase tomatoes directly from local growers that I know and IN SEASON
Secondly, when I do shop at supermarkets I would rather support markets like Gabriel's and Greulich's than Price Chopper and Hannaford --- that is my choice and the last time I looked we were still free to make those decisions -- unfortunately the brown-shirted NAZIs like MT would prefer to tell us where we should shop and what we should purchase.
and as for MT's rude remarks - I am quite knowledgeable about calories and nutrition -- and, for the record, do eat a very healthy, well-rounded, nutritionally balanced diet. MT (the "fraudulent catholic") thinks that his remarks about other person's weight are humorous .. actually they just show how much an a**-hole he is. I have never weighed more than 260 pounds and there are factors other than diet and nutrition that account for that. My doctor and I are extremely pleased with my current weight - which is considerably less than it was 6 months ago ,, and will continue to decline over the months and years ahead -- at least, I don't suffer what MT and his ilk suffer from ----- >> "fat head syndrome"

You need to fully understand ethylene gas and use/negative factors. It is not desireable to do this "gassing" becuase it quickly ripens but also accelerates deterioration. "Ethylene gas is the ripening agent which occurs naturally in nature. It causes fruits to ripen & decay, vegetables & floral to wilt. Controlling ethylene gas after picking will extend the life cycle of the commodity-allowing them to be held for a much a longer period of time. While refrigeration & humidity slow decay, they don't halt the production of harmful ethylene gas. Ethylene gas is also used in ripening rooms to color up the fruit then is moved to a regular cold storage room with other produce. Some fruits gassed with ethylene are Bananas, Tomatoes and Avocados. The ethylene gas turns Bananas yellow, Tomatoes red and make Avocados soft and ready to eat. Ethylene gas and it's removal are both important in giving the consumer the best possible product. Ethylene gas is used under controlled conditions as a ripening agent, even small amounts of ethylene gas during shipping and storage causes most fresh produce to deteriorate faster. Automotive emissions, plastics, smoke and fluorescent lights all increase ethylene gas levels. A single propane-powered forklift can cause serious damage in highly ethylene gas-sensitive commodities." The preferred method used by growers and buyers of their products to bring them to market is controlled atmosphere transportaion, i.e. refrigerated transport.

THE FACT IS.........you said that GOLUB 'gases' their produce!!! And joeboxer is correct....they are refrigerated when transporting!! Take a field trip to the price chopper freezer, produce warehouse and railex!! You need to educate yourself!
And I'm sure the dem-o-conservative parties are more than happy that you are their spokes person!! You say quite a lot for their ideology, education and mentality!!

Bumble - What's the point? Even if he's totally wrong in his assumption, PC's tomatoes taste like garbage. In fact, just about everything I get at that market is shite. Perfect example of a business that grew a near-monopoly and basically gave up producing high quality goods. If they weren't so convenient and actually went head-to-head with Hannaford, you'd see old man Golub out there begging for change.
HACK, apparently PC by you may have issues, then. PC near me has better produce than Wegman's and Tops...matter of fact, their produce is better than the 2 Mom/Pop grocery stores that are closer to my home and buy only local grown produce.

Funny part is, most of the produce comes from the same growers. The only difference is how the produce departments are set up, and how often they rotate their stock on the produce display tables. It's marketing.

...who cares about how much you weigh? What is astonishing is what a light weight you are mentally.
"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."
The FACT is that the commercial growers pick the tomatoes while they are still green --- store them for months -- and gas them to make them turn red in time to be sent out across the country.
This has been reported in many sources and openly admitted by the commercial growers themselves.
The rest of you need to educate yourselves as to where your food comes from -- and how unnatural methods are used to ensure the availability of produce during the off seasons.
If you want to taste a tomato the way God intended a tomato to taste --- grow your own ( I would suggest an heirloom variety) or purchase your tomatoes directly from the farmer/producer IN SEASON.

Your initial post stated the Price Chopper and Hannaford warehoused them green and gassed them. I do agree that some tomatoes are picked green and gassed BY THE GROWER so they start "breaking" or turning. But also some are allowed to ripen on the vine, and some are grown in hot houses that wait until they turn on the vine. But I'm pretty positive supermarket distribution centers don't gas tomatoes - banana's YES.

i clearly stated that the it was the commercial growers who picked them green and gassed them -- and it is NOT just some .. it is all the tomatoes except those used for canning -- and those are a different variety of tomato than the ones grown to be sold as whole tomatoes in the produce section.
Just admit it -- I was right AGAIN and you Nattering Nayboobs of Negativity were wrong as usual.

How about YOU admit you are mistaken or provide support for your statements that are other than "it's been reported by....." So let me explain something....I am employed and directly involved in the transport refrigeration business, so knowledge in this area is important to our success. Growers WILL NOT prematurely pick product, store it then gas it before trasnporting it. Local growers "may" prematurely pick in order not to have product prematurely ripen becuase they transport their produce in non-refrigeraed vehicles, usually for short distances. A grower in CALIF sending product to NY, simply cannot pick green product, store it, gas it and ship. The purpose of refrigerated transport is to delay the ripening process that natureally occurs with the release of ethylene gas. We support the largest refrigerated transport providers in the US, and I have personally seen produce leave the grower, directly into the warehouse and then onto transport vehicles within 24 hr periods to be sure to send product that is not ripened too quickly. Growers want to move their product as quickly as possible after picked...it's to their benefit and the only way to get product to market that buyers wil laccept.
Sorry that you may have read some information and then generalized it as you have, but you are mistaken in your comments!
