Now onto to bumble: the re-val was a bi-partisan effort from Paolino, Marco and Vellano. Vellano was the deciding vote. All three "visionaries" for progress. Make the tax rolls fair, new developments happy and state aid over $65,000 in hand. Tons of people went for help???? One ton equals 2,000 lbs. So by your embellished estimates "tons" means what 4,000, 6,0000, 8,000 people??? Macejaka did his job and it remains to be seen what the after effects of that hatchet job will do to Stevie Wonder's vote totals the next time around. The assessor ( John) is a great public servant who should have been commended for his efforts by the administration for enduring the fallout from a long overdue project that was not his doings. What is it with the name calling? Wasn't that supposed to end by the time you got to second grade? This is at least the second time I've seen you say this - it really makes me think you're still in Pre-K.
Many people in this town were over assessed by the reval and when they went to Mr Macejka they were ignored. Some people had to have their house assessed by a professional and were found to be over valued by many thousands of dollars, far below what they could sell their house for on the open market. The complaint was the fact that the assessment wasn't done fairly, granted we needed a reval to bring all the homes in Rotterdam up to full assessment so we'd be able to get state aid which we wouldn't be able to get unless we were at full assessed value. When a reval is done usually 1/3 of the houses have the tax drop, 1/3 have the tax on their homes stay the same, and 1/3 of the of the homes have their taxes go up. I haven't talked to many people who have had their taxes go down, most everyone's taxes have gone up. Many residents met with GAR and Macejka trying to reach a fair assessment and now all property values are down and we're being taxed at a rate well above the market value of our homes and you call that fair?
I believe Bob Godlewski, Diane Marco, Tony Jasenski, Judy Dagostino, Susan Savage, Brian Stratton, Tony Cervera, Brian Quail, John Paolino every dem public official for that matter have all endured name calling, nicknames etc. Hey Eliot Spitzer has been called various names of late. Oh and by the way I know many people who are happy with the re-val because they now see that fair assessments are town wide and the real culprit of sky rocketing tax bills is the elected officials who determine tax rates. Steve Tomassone knows the tax rate decrese in town taxes was because of the re-val and he survived politically because of it. Wait till next time. I have talked to the new assessor and he seems to be a very fair individual but there's nothing that he can do right now about the reval it's a done deal. There have been Democratic hacks like you, PDQ, before and I sure hope you guys run Godlewski again because he doesn't have a chance because he has no vision for the future and will be badly beaten. Mertz and Signore formed a police commission, hired and promoted officers without Mr. Tomassone's authorization? I find that hard to believe. Judging by the mailers sent out, the Democrats seemed to think they could pin these fabricated issues on Mr. Tomassone during his re-election. Update.......It didn't work.....Landslide. The residents had the chance to negate the super majority.....they didn't.
The political landscape of Rotterdam has changed. The General Electric tax base is gone. The residents can't afford to pander to the police or teachers unions and pay for $95,000 retired cops or $80,000 teachers with $28,000 medical benefits, and they certainly don't want anyone in office who might. But.....you can continue to pit the residents against those who's salaries are paid for by the residents. Maybe it'll work out for ya....What do I know.
I still dont understand everyone's beef about the re-val----here's the deal dollar store spenders....if your house isn't worth that much then your neighbors house isn't far behind,,,,now they put their house up for sale and who moves in but the person that can afford it....who might that be considering we live right next door to the city----integrity challenged folks who like to keep leather couches on their front porches.....And dont complain when you cant sell your house because of the couch on your new neighbors porch......

Exactly my point Shadow there was nothing Maceajka could do either. The re-val was a done deal for him also. But to put a guy out on the street for doing his job. I don't think so. Did your assessment or the 500 or 600 other disgruntled residents see a change in their assessment because of Maceajka's ouster?? Nope and you know what it ain't gonna happen any time soon. The political winds of the re-val have died down and will not be an issue in 2009. I am amazed at the number of people who by nature are unfair. For years not paying their fair share of the pie and they crow about Maceaka's not doing his job. He did his job and was honored for his achievements. Too bad the Tomassone administration punked out and put a hometown "hero" on the street.
It is still East VS West Rotterdam.....the east border is on the front line to the area of the city that Mr.Stratton happens not to notice.....maybe the kids will play better in the future,,,but,,,in the mean time there is a dissident and it will grow.......

Sorry there PDQ, but this was not a fair assessment. Do you know that GAR actually assessed a home that had been torn down 2 years before? Do you know that GAR never even went to some of these properties to see them so they could be assessed? Do you know how many homes that went from 1200 sq ft to 2100 sq ft over the years and GAR never did a new assessment on them?
No one is saying they don't want to pay their 'fair share'. But it isn't fair! And I personally went to Macejeka and he was a joke. That was his job and he did absolutely nothing. So I am soooo happy that he is GONE!!!

Landslide is when you have an overwhelming mandate from a MAJORITY of all enrolled voters. Steve T. totals were alarmingly low for an incumbent who had everthing going his way because of the re-val windfall. Sure the Dems have thier work cut out for them but Rotterdam has been a traditionally Democtartic Town and I think its safe to say it is an attainable election next time out.
Hey, Siggy got bounced after two terms, Paolino served two and I think when the time comes Steve T and the "boys" will be fighting for their political lives. Time will tell.
