Bruno has change of heart on gay marriage rights
BY MICHAEL GORMLEY The Associated Press

Former New York Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno said he now supports legalizing same-sex marriage in New York, a change of heart that could infl uence the measure’s chances in the state Senate.
The 80-year-old Republican, who retired last year as the state’s most powerful Republican, tells The Associated Press he now sees the issue as a civil right.
“As a Republican, I believe in personal freedom,” Bruno said in a written statement. He said support of the measure by Democratic Gov. David Paterson, a friend and longtime collegial adversary in the Senate, helped him change his mind about same-sex marriage. Bruno blocked an earlier version of the bill that the Democrat-led Assembly passed two years ago.
“I opposed same-sex marriage largely because the overwhelming majority of my caucus opposed it,” Bruno stated. “As a relatively conservative Roman Catholic, I instinctively view marriage as the foundation of the family.
“However, that view really does conflict with the rights that are afforded all of us,” he said. “This is America and we have inalienable rights … life is short and we should all be afforded the same opportunities and rights to enjoy it.”
Bruno’s wife of 57 years, Barbara, died in 2008 after years of suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. .........>>>>..........................>>>>...........http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....amp;EntityId=Ar01402

Marriage is about law, not science

As I read the June 11 letter “Same-sex marriage violates natural science,” by Emily O’Grady, I felt compelled to write and comment on her logic.
How can she state that marriage is the “natural science of a male and female fusing for the purpose of procreation?” “Marriage” is not a biological or scientific institution, but one created and maintained through government and laws. Procreation was around before marriage. It can and is accomplished without it.
I will agree with one thing that Emily said — cultures change and the laws of natural science are absolute. There was a time when women could not hold property and certain races could be taken as slaves by law. The culture at the time felt that was natural science, too.
Marriage is all about the law, and by not allowing same-sex marriage we deny those people their legal right to be protected under laws pertaining to married couples. Of Emily’s letter I agree, a mule is a mule!

Is Debbie actually comparing two men or two women having sex to women who couldn't own property and slavery? And she even throws in the word 'procreate' in the mix! Weird to say the least. That makes her entire article null and void! IMHO

Government is not in the 'business' of dictating the bible, any bible for that matter, regardless of it's title.....
as for marriage,,,,,it's been tossed around for ages as a 'solid foundation' until someone deems that 'it just doesn't work' or
'we are just incompatible'......so it really doesn't make a difference who is in a marriage...
if we want a marriage dictated then we should go to a church/synagoge/etc for the moral definition......until that time
the government can deem who should be married......why? because the conscience of our government are those elected
and those elected have been 'schooled' on marriage(supposedly).....but given that pastors/priests/churches/wicans etc have the
authority to perform a 'moral marriage' then that is what folks should do......

AP source: Same-sex partners to get fed benefits
AP source: Obama to sign order extending benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees

By PHILIP ELLIOTT, Associated Press
Last updated: 10:05 p.m., Tuesday, June 16, 2009

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama, under growing criticism for not seeking to end the ban on openly gay men and women in the military, is extending benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees. Obama plans to announce his decision on Wednesday in the Oval Office, a White House official said Tuesday. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the president hadn't yet signed the presidential memorandum.

The official said Obama would release more details on Wednesday.

The decision is a political nod to a reliably Democratic voting bloc that in recent weeks has grown frustrated with the White House's slow movement on their priorities.

Several powerful gay fundraisers withdrew their support from a June 25 Democratic National Committee event where Vice President Joe Biden is expected to speak. Their exit came in response to a June 12 Justice Department brief that defended the Defense of Marriage Act, a prime target for gay and lesbian criticism. Justice lawyers argued that the law allowed states to reject marriages performed in other states or countries that defy their own standards.............>>>>............>>>>.............http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=810930

I think he is soooo liberal that even the other liberals will find him dangerously to far to the left! The people I work with who voted for him are second guessing their choice.

Does everyone think he is acting alone??????

The words liberal and conservative have nothing to do with the drive for power.....the conversation between 'liberal' or 'conservatives'
is just smoke and mirrors for covering up the power source.....

Same-sex marriage isn’t for all, but that’s no reason to ban it

The June 11 letter from Emily O’Grady [“Same-sex marriage violates natural science”] provided strong assurance that homophobia, bigotry and ignorance still thrive in our society.
Claiming marriage to be a “biological definition” and “principle of natural science” screams of fear — fear of something that defies her beliefs.
Marriage is a cultural invention. In the animal world, males and females do not always mate for life. In some species, one male may have a “harem” of females with which to mate. In human society, the current commonly accepted definition of marriage is religiously based. Yet, through centuries of human culture, homosexuality has existed. Most of the time, it was repressed, because people have an intense fear of the unknown.
Recently, a feeling of enlightenment and acceptance of varying lifestyles has grown. Yet, I can’t help feeling that this is often superficial as people struggle to be politically correct. I often hear prejudice in private conversations; gay marriage is only one of many topics involving this alarming nature of humanity. We can read the news each day of different groups, of the same religious beliefs, fighting each other.
Biology dictates that males and females mate and procreate to continue the species. Marriage is a tool of social order. Ms. O’Grady suggests that gays be happy with civil unions — I must say that I would love my wife just as dearly if we had a civil union, instead of a marriage. What’s the difference? It’s personal.
Why, Ms. O’Grady and others, must you insist that everyone live according to your lifestyle? What do you fear? The suggestion that gays should compromise in their quest to be legitimate and normal raises a question: Compromise with whom? You?
In matters such as personal relationships, people have a right to choose their lifestyle if it doesn’t harm anyone else. I think the U.S. Constitution embodies that idea of freedom of choice, but maybe that document hasn’t made its way to Niskayuna yet. Life is good; enjoy yours and stay out of other’s lives.

Now not the time for marriage bill
With Senate in turmoil, gay rights must wait

Sunday, June 28, 2009
By Sara Foss (Contact)
Gazette Reporter

CAPITAL REGION — For now, same-sex marriage is off the table in New York — and some supporters of the proposed bill to legalize same-sex marriage think that’s fine.
They say they don’t want the bill to be enacted while the leadership of the state Senate is in dispute because they fear that that would make it easier for opponents to get it overturned later on. Some had expected the Senate to take up the bill, which was passed by the Assembly in May, this week. Gov. David Paterson has said that he would sign it if it reached his desk.
“We’re not disappointed,” said Nora Yates, executive director of the Capital District Gay and Lesbian Community Council. “We want marriage equality to be legal and not be partisan and not be in question. Because of all the confusion, we’re glad it’s not coming up. This is not a partisan issue. It’s people’s lives. We would like marriage removed from the drama.”
Even so, same-sex couples are anxious, Yates said.
“Having marriage equality is a daily issue for them,” she said.
Above the fray
In a statement, Alan Van Capelle, executive director of the Empire State Pride Agenda, said that the Senate needs to handle the marriage bill “respectfully.”
“State senators need to know that it is unacceptable to leave Albany without voting on and passing the marriage bill,” Van Capelle said. “Marriage equality is not a partisan issue and should never be used as a political football in the current situation that has caused complete gridlock in our state capitol. Thousands of New York families expect and need senators to immediately figure out a way to work together and start doing the people’s business. ... We expect that marriage will be at the top of the agenda when the stalemate is over and the Senate resumes its business, but only when we are certain that any such vote taken by the Senate is valid and not subject to legal challenge.”
But not everyone who supports the bill is counseling patience.
“We’re very disappointed in the Senate for not taking up the issue,” said Melanie Trimble, executive director of the Albany chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union. “We think that if you look at the recent polls, people in New York state overwhelmingly favor marriage rights. Out there in the community, there is a feeling that if all these other states are recognizing marriage equality, New York is lagging behind.”
Same-sex marriage has been legalized in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. California legalized same-sex marriage in 2008, but it was overturned by Proposition 8, a controversial ballot proposition passed by voters.
A Quinnipiac University poll released earlier this month found that for the first time, a slim majority of New York voters now support legalizing same-sex marriage. According to the poll, 51 percent of voters support same-sex marriage, versus 41 percent who oppose it and 8 percent who are undecided...........>>>>.................>>>>...............http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2009/jun/28/0627_gaybill/

Paterson puts marriage rights on agenda
The Associated Press

New York Gov. David Paterson will take a shot at fulfilling his promise to legalize same-sex marriage in an extraordinary session Tuesday, but it’s uncertain whether there will be a final vote on the bill.
The Democrat, flagging in the polls as he runs for election in 2010, has long made passing the bill a policy goal, and it is a big part of his effort to energize his chances for election.
Although the Legislature is required to attend the session, it isn’t required to vote. The bill requires final legislative approval in the Democrat-controlled Senate, but it’s unclear if there are enough Republican votes to compensate for a few Democrats who oppose it on religious grounds.
    Democrats hold a 32-30 majority.
Compounding the issue is the death of the mother of Democratic Sen. Thomas Duane of Manhattan, the bill’s longtime leading sponsor. He has been the key in negotiations and in persuading colleagues to vote for the measure. Her death was announced Thursday; the funeral services may not be complete until Monday.
Maine’s same-sex marriage law was repealed Tuesday in a referendum, 53 percent to 47 percent, a bitter setback to gay rights advocates. Same-sex marriage is legal in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa and Vermont and becomes legal in New Hampshire in January. ..................>>>>.....................>>>>....................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01503&AppName=1
