I went through the Hamburg Street/Curry Road intersection where they want to put a round-a-bout. I really don't see a need for one there. Just alternate red lites with arrows. No big deal. No need for round-a-bout. No need to spend our tax dollar when a simple traffic lite fix would do the job!!

It doesnt matter to me what they do, as long as they do something...always potential for an accident ALWAYS !!!! I guess I just like the way a roundabout looks....If you read the data on them 1) they are supposed to be safer and do work ( so they say ) 2) overall it is supposed to be a cheaper solution long term than the new lights, roadway would still need construction and redesign...so who knows....just do something I guess...

At least something would be happening on Hamburg...seems like just a bunch of talk....nothing seems to be happening, I dont hear of any plans for a thing......i see the graffiti has started again on the Grand Union building...

I saw the graffiti too! Although I am seeing more and more of it popping up all over Rotterdam. I hope this isn't a glimpse of things to come!

Usually, that type of thing is done by the local government, or a group of businesses, such as the Hamburg St. Merchants.

The town mentioned that they had to contact National Grid and have them put up electric outlets on every pole to be decorated with Christmas lights so it may take until next year b4 anything is done on Hamburg Street.

Christmas decorations would be nice, BUT, lets focus on the real issues such as infrastructure. Christmas decorations are just a covering of the real issues! The businesses should just decorate their own buildings for the time being. IMHO!

ROTTERDAM
Grants draw interest from Hamburg Street

BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter
Reach Gazette reporter Justin Mason at 395-3113 or jmason@dailygazette.net.

When Rotterdam’s Industrial Development Agency offered up 10 small business grants for facade improvements this fall, they found willing takers on Hamburg Street.
Among the nine applications, more than half came from Hamburg Street business owners. The interest is indicative of the desire to beautify and revitalize the once bustling section of Rotterdam, said Frank DePalma, the owner of De-Palma’s Screening and co-director of the merchants association.
“It’s right up the alley for what we’re trying to do with Hamburg Street,” he said.
The grants require an equal match from the business owner and will be dedicated to facade improvements, building sidewalks, adding landscaping and bettering handicap accessibility. IDA Chairman Angelo Santabarbara said the grants are an example of some of the programs that will eventually lead to more.
“This is just one step in the right direction,” he said. “In the future, more will come.”
DePalma and merchants association co-director Sam Valvala, the owner of Christopher’s Tuxedo, are among at least five business owners applying. The agency’s full board will review the grants next month; $25,000 is available in total.
If awarded the funding, DePalma plans to put new siding on the front of his store and repair several fl ower boxes, a project estimated to cost $4,000. He said the grant funding is just the motivation some small businesses need to move along projects to enhance the street’s aesthetic appeal.
“If you need work done, here’s a grant that is going to help you,” he said.
Santabarbara also hopes to post more information about IDA programs, such as the small business grants, on the agency’s Web site at http://www.rotterdamida.org. He said part of the difficulty in starting new IDA initiatives is getting word out to the business community.
