In naval terminology, a destroyer is a fast, maneuverable long-endurance warship providing defense against incoming missiles and planes.
Mon Jun 19, 2017....The Destroyer  USS Fitzgerald was dead in the water (  with no electronics  ? ) Knocked out by  who or what ?
A container ship then does a U turn plows into it

The USS Fitzgerald has radar/sonar that can see a fish in the water.
Something is fishy.

According to reports I've read, communications "from" the ship were damaged by the collision. I've read nothing or heard no
reports that any of the communications equipment that would have alerted the ship to potential approaching ships or "fish" were
inoperable prior to the collision (or even after). What they say was damaged was the ability to communicate aboard ship and
to communicate beyond, forcing them to use satellite phones.

Stop embarrassing yourself...try reading articles before you post. It clearly states and is written about THE CONTAINER SHIP and the strange path
it took along with the delay in reporting the collision.  Article says NOTHING about the USS Fitz not being able to see it. You simply continue to
strengthen the fact that you have terrible comprehension issues.

Oh, you're right.  My fault, maybe it did see it, it must have let it run into it.  Either way, a container ship put a destroyer out of commission.  Let's hope those scary North Koreans don't have anything more sophisticated than a container ship.

Let me help you...there is an ongoing investigation (understand what ongoing investigation means??, to determine how this collision
occurred and (are you ready for this......), "why" the USS FITZ was not able to avoid it. There have been no reports that they did or did not
see the approaching container ship. They are reporting that they are trying to understand what happened and why. They are looking at:
were they aware of potential collision and not able to avoid it in time and why; was there an equipment error that prevented detection or avoidance;
were there jamming signals that interfered with equipment; was it human error, etc. But, to date, they have not reached a conclusion as to why!
So if you Sissypoo are so smart as to know the answer, then please contact the Pentagon and enlighten them with your infinite wisdom.

Maritime Mystery: Why a U.S. Destroyer Failed to Dodge a Cargo Ship
There should have been lookouts on watch on the port, starboard and stern of the destroyer Fitzgerald — sailors scanning the horizon with binoculars and reporting by headsets to the destroyer’s bridge. At 1:30 a.m. last Saturday, off the coast of Japan south of Tokyo, they could hardly have failed to see the 730-foot freighter ACX Crystal, stacked with more than 1,000 containers, as it closed in.

Radar officers working both on the bridge and in the combat information center below it should have spotted the freighter’s image on their screens, drawing steadily closer. And under standard protocol, the Fitzgerald’s captain, Cmdr. Bryce Benson, should have been awakened and summoned to the bridge to assure a safe passage long before the ships could come near each other.
But none of that happened. The Fitzgerald’s routine cruise in good weather through familiar, if crowded, seas ended in the most lethal Navy accident in years. Seven sailors lost their lives.

As investigators try to figure out what many veteran seamen describe as an incomprehensible collision, they have plenty of mysteries to unravel. In addition to the questions for the destroyer’s crew, there is the peculiar course of the Crystal after the accident, recorded by ship-tracking websites. It raises the possibility that no one was awake, or at least aware of their surroundings, when the two ships hit.

Rather than cut engines, assess the damage and look for ways to assist, the Crystal quickly resumed its former course, steaming toward Tokyo harbor for a half-hour before suddenly executing a U-turn and returning to the crash site — as if the ship’s crew had belatedly realized what had happened.

Investigators have spent the past week surveying the damage, reviewing logs, recovering electronic records — a “black box” aboard the Crystal and stored radar data from the Fitzgerald — and interviewing crew members. There should also be an audio recording from the bridge of the destroyer, like the harrowing tape of a 2012 collision between a different destroyer, the Porter, and an oil tanker, in which no one was injured.

Under strict orders not to talk about what they saw that night, the crew of the Fitzgerald is mostly keeping its counsel while grieving the loss of its shipmates. But one sailor, contacted via social media, offered what may endure as an epitaph for the accident.

“All I can say is,” the sailor wrote to The New York Times, “somebody wasn’t paying attention.”

The ship failed at its job.  Whether human error, or equipment error, or  jamming signal, it FAILED.  A commercial container ship took out a billion dollar US destroyer.  The Pentagon should be EMBARRASSED.

Sure something failed but You sound like your almost happy ?  Your probably thinking that  " we " shouldnt have been out there snooping around anyway.
Embarressed ? Why do you want to inflict shame on a real tragedy ?

This was like a 747 flying into an F-15 fighter

First, not happy about it.  No real emotional attachment to a navy destroyer.  Second, "we" aren't out snooping around north korea, the federal government is.  Third, I'm not inflicting shame and it isn't a real tragedy.  A child drowning in a swimming pool is a tragedy.  This was paid soldiers killed and injured in their war ship while playing war games on the other side of the planet.

I didn't tell a person they should be embarrassed, I said the the pentagram(an organization) that has an annual budget of something like $600 billion should be embarrassed that one of their technologically advanced war ships was taken out a by a commercial container ship, killing 7 crew members.  You don't think the people running a $600 billion organization should be ashamed of that?  People shamed and criticized Samsung because their phone batteries were exploding in people's faces. They were probably even sued.  I don't recall anybody offering sympathy toward Samsung for the tragedy of those injured due to their defective product. Nor should they.
