An open question to the ~50% of the electorate who voted for each of the major party candidates in the 2016 Presidential election: “Is the Republic Safe”?  This question needs to be thoughtfully contemplated, without partisan bias, by those on both sides of our nation’s vast political and ideological divide.  Consider the following:

Are Americans confident that our government is "of the people, by the people, for the people" as envisioned and structured by our Founding Fathers? Do all citizens enjoy the principle that "all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”  Are the Founding Principles, the bedrock values that formed the basis of the American Experiment, still revered and defended by those sworn to uphold the US Constitution?

Are the three branches of the federal government each functioning as co-equal with specific enumerated powers?  Are our elected representatives accountable to their constituents? Do they govern in the interests of the individual?  Are enemies, foreign and domestic, in retreat?  Is the United States respected by foreign powers and still considered to be the land of opportunity, the “shining city on a hill”?

Do we have a federalist or nationalist form of government as it functions today? Do state and local governments continue to possess the powers guaranteed by the 10th Amendment to the United States Constitution?

It has been quoted that “eternal vigilance is the price of liberty”. If we the citizens of the United States of America let down our guard, our freedoms may be seized. "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

If freedom is to endure, it is imperative that we consider the question posed above. Is the Republic safe? If we cannot answer with resounding affirmation, there is work that remains to be done.

The Congress hasn't made a declaration of war in nearly 80 years yet the USG has been in perpetual war for nearly 70 years.  Is it safe?  It hasn't been for a quite some time.

I can't disagree with you Cicero.

The branches of government continue to breach the established limits of their authority without meaningful and organized opposition.  Examples include the (now routine) surveillance of American citizens by our intelligence community, the implementation of regulations established by "rogue" federal agencies (e.g., EPA), and, as identified by you, the deployment of our military assets, without the consent of Congress, to theaters around the world to engage in operations in which we (sometimes) seemingly have no national interest.

I am deeply troubled by the breakdown of the federal government  The Executive Branch legislates using the issuance of Executive Orders signed by the President (of both parties).  The Judicial Branch has abandoned their role of interpreting the established law and has turned to "legislating from the bench".  And, the Legislative Branch is too dysfunctional to serve in the interests of Americans.  Partisanship, graft and the constant campaigning for lifetime careers on the government payroll has poisoned both chambers.

I must admit that I already was of the opinion that you express, that the Republic is NOT safe (and has not been so in decades).  So, the questions that we must answer are if it is too late to affect the needed change and how to do so?   Taking the ball and going home is not an option if we are to survive as a nation.

Where are the principled leaders of today who hold the beliefs and voice the sentiments like those expressed by President John F. Kennedy in his Inaugural Address?

They don't run for office because they don't want to be killed by the people who really run the government.
