CBS 6 Updated: Tuesday, November 10 2015, 09:17 PM EST ROTTERDAM -- Sen. George Amedore said Tuesday that the town will receive a grant of $354,000 to make repairs on the Rotterdam Senior Center. The anticipated upgrades will improve the condition of the facility, and will also qualify it to be certified as an emergency shelter for all residents of Schenectady County in the event of a disaster or an evacuation order. The grant will cover a power system backup, installation of a gas-powered generator, replacement of the auditorium flooring, replacement of the roof of the south wing, modernization and updates to two existing septic systems, kitchen upgrades, and enhanced water lines for the two industrial kitchens.

Seniors still use the center.  The center is used for more than just senior activities.  It really should be renamed the Rotterdam Community Center.

As for the septic systems -- The Hamburg Street Corridor and most of the rest of the town should really be brought from the 19th century into the 21st century by putting in public sewer lines.

The old idea of a "Senior Center" will be passe in 10-15 years. The next retiring generation isn't looking for that type of model anymore. Even my parents tired of the same formula year after year. It ends up being another fifedom where people can wield "power"...just look at the Fraternal organizations like the Elk and Eagles... their membership numbers are dropping yearly, many chapters are consolidating or flat out folding... The Rotterdam Elks lodge has the biggest member base in the state, and even they are in trouble. it's just not apparant to the public yet... The leaders just increased dues by 33% for regular members and close to 50% for life members, scheduled to hit next year...no amount of bailing water is going to save things long term.

Rotterdam Elks still don't allow women members or black people.

They should be losing members.

There is nothing in the bylaws that exclude either....I won't go into the details of the voting process, but it I will say that the  process is anonymous and that ONE member voting can deny membership to a candidate for ANY reason, which they do not have to disclose.
However, there is one avenue that allows anyone to become a Rotterdam Elks lodge member...if they are an current up to date member of another lodge, they can transfer membership to another lodge, including Rotterdam. Since this is a clerical process, there is NO vote.

The above is still not the reason orgs like the Elks are losing members... it's changing Demographics... the same ones that have affected the Bowling establsihments in the area.

And WHO will pay for the sewers?   No answer of course.   If it's optional, fine, but when people have relatively newer septic tanks to last for decades and then pay only about $150 once every three years to pump it out, they should not be forced to pay hundreds perhaps over a thousand each year.

If you like sewers so much you can pay the sewer costs of the town

Public sewers are an investment that improves the quality of life, protects the environment AND encourages economic development.
Rotterdam needs public sewers and other improvements so that it can finally leave the 19th century and enter the 21st century.

And again, are YOU going to pay for them?   I can see it for business, but WHY residential?

WHY should families have to hook up and pay probably $1,000 a  year for many years to hook up PLUS $250 roughly a year for a "fee" which WILL increase regularly (NEITHER of which is tax deductible--you wouldn't know about that).  Many people are on fixed incomes, so how is it better for the government to create a new expense to people rather than paying the low cost of about $150 every three years for septic pump out?

Paying over $1,000 to for a socialist sewer system vs the people having the freedom to choose their septic company for a tiny fraction as much.  People's qualify of life is better when they can spend THEIR money they way they want to, not be giving it to the government.    But then, people who don't pay taxes think everyone is rich and has money to burn.

Because the he/she whiner is upset that I said that the Hamburg Street Corridor should be on public sewers.  The senior center has 2 aging septic systems because there are no sewers along the Hamburg Street Corridor.

He/she thinks that public sewers are socialist.  (ROFLMAO)

He/she doesn't realize that septic systems are bad for the environment and the many developers will NOT build where there are no sewers.

He/she complains about high taxes but hates economic development which would help increase the tax base and ease residential property taxes.
