The town was involved in at least 3 legal cases that year using outside counsel because the worthless town attorney doesn't know the law well enough. All brought on by town employees not properly doing their jobs. I am surprised it was more than this amount.

Hey, when are they going to dump MyGuirl, now that Harry is gone.

ROTTERDAM — A controversial $50 brush fee would be history in 2018 under a resolution the Town Board introduced with unanimous approval Wednesday amid criticism that the three newest members of the panel reneged on a campaign promise.

Under the measure, the fee residents pay for leaf and brush pick up would drop to $40 this year, $25 next year, and be eliminated by the start of 2018.

But the amended resolution wasn't good enough for Rotterdam resident Erik Batcher.

He reminded Supervisor Steve Tommasone and board members Evan Christou and Samantha Miller-Herrera that "repealing the fee was one your main campaign promises."

"The brush fee has only been collected for two years and is already a financial crutch," added Batcher.

He was one of two people who spoke during the public hearing on an old resolution that called for killing the brush fee in five years.

The fee was implemented two years ago by the previous administration of Supervisor Harry Buffardi.

Residents have complained that an opt-out clause requires them to get their signatures notarized and that two different dates on the paperwork is confusing.

Councilman Joe Villano said that the brush fee is really a tax and agreed with Batcher that the Tommasone, Christou and Miller-Herrera team had broken a campaign pledge.

Christou said he took offense to the accusation and expressed a desire for the board as a whole to work together.

"This is a prudent approach to keeping the promise, no one has broken a campaign promise," he added.

Saying he understood the town's financial hardships, Villano suggested a possible compromise would be to slash the fee this year and then doing away with it completely in 2017.

Miller-Herrera said that phasing out the fee by 2018 is what she and her running mates, Christou and Tommasone told people they would do and right now "is the most fiscally responsible way for us to do this."

She said eliminating the fee in one fell swoop could cause the town to break the state tax cap and jeopardize the rebate they could receive if that doesn't happen.

Afterward, Miller-Herrera said that after they could abolish the fee before 2018 depending on how the town's finances look after they review the spending plan later this year.

Another public hearing on the new brush fee resolution will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
