Election Day is a little over a week away and the rematch in Schenectady's mayoral race is heating up.

The candidates are using the time left to knock on doors and asking voters for their support.

Democrat Gary McCarthy, the incumbent running for his second mayoral term in Schenectady made a stop at a breakfast award for the city's firefighters Sunday morning.

He plans to spend the next seven days before the election knocking on doors to spread his message.

“I look back at the last four years. I'm proud of the accomplishments that we've been able to bring to the City of Schenectady,” says McCarthy.

The mayor says he will continue the work on developing the city's downtown while fanning out into neighborhoods to clean things up.

However, he says he's most proud of his work to stabilize the city's finances, getting a perfect score in a fiscal stress analysis.

“We're one of three communities that doesn't have fiscal stress by the view of the comptroller's office,” says the mayor.

But McCarthy's opponent, former Union College President Roger Hull is painting a much different picture.

He says debt has gone up in the Electric City under McCarthy, he describes it as a mammoth fiscal problem.

“We're playing the shell game, moving one thing to another and try to hide things for as long as possible,” says Hull.

Hull, who's running as an Independent was also out knocking on doors.

He says downtown has made a comeback and much of it, he says, was his work and that of Price Chopper's Neil Golub through Metroplex.

But, he says many neighborhoods are still being ignored.

“I've walked every street in the city over these last five months and Mont Pleasant and Hamilton Hill and Goose Hill are not what they were,” says Hull.

Hull and McCarthy have faced off before with McCarthy winning by a small margin.

They say they're not taking anything for granted, but they feel good going into next Tuesday.

Yeah, Homes is working  ROFL.   How come I have gotten the facts and the facts are that only a small portion of the houses are actually selling.

If he claims it's working, how come he won't have his newspapers publish a list of all the houses and all the info I post here?  Of course, he won't do that because it will PROVE MASSIVE FAILURE.

Instead he has the tax delinquent city subsidized real estate agent and board of assessment member tell lies at all these press conferences.

I believe he had a hand in the development of Metroplex, but at the time, there was NEVER mention that the homeowners would have their property and school taxes increased in order to exempt the milionaires and billionaires from paying taxes on their downtown buildings.

not to mention that mr. golub has benefited quite well with METROPLEX $$$$$.

HULL TOOK CREDIT FOR DOWNTOWN'S UPSWING!!!!!!!!

He never ONCE said it was done on the backs of the taxpayers.....NOT ONCE!!!

so he WOULD and will CONTINUE to do the same thing if elected.

no mention of making downtown 'pay their fair share'....cause he can't!!!

nothing will change.....get it????
