ROTTERDAM – More than half a dozen cars were broke into in Rotterdam overnight.

It happened on Country Brook Court Monday night.

The thief took money, credit cards and a laptop computer out of the vehicles. Neighbors tell NewsChannel 13 that one family who had their car broken into had just moved into the area from Florida. Their personal information was stolen in the break-in.

It’s the second string of car break-ins in the cul-de-sac recently. Neighbors say many people leave their car doors unlocked.

Car alarms cost next to nothing.

Most people simply leave their cars unlocked for the small change bandits.

It came from Schenectady

Quoted Text
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Police say a Schenectady man was arrested after he allegedly searched unlocked vehicles and stole from them.

The man, 32-year-old James Fitzgerald of Schenectady, entered approximately 18 unlocked vehicles.

Among the recovered stolen items included golf clubs, a hand cart and a Macbook laptop that were stolen from cars on Country Brook Court.

Authorities also say that Fitzgerald stole a credit card on Wednesday, September 2 and used it at two Walmarts and a Sunoco.

Fitzgerald was located and arrested on Friday, September 4 for two counts of Forgery and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property.

Any victims that have not yet contacted the Rotterdam police are asked to call 355-7397.

Residents are again reminded to always lock their car doors and to not leave valuables visible in their vehicles.

ANYONE who leaves their car unlocked, or worse--leaves valuables in the car (locked or unlocked)--needs to have their head examined;  if their car gets broken into, they have only themselves to blame and they most likely will suffer the consequences as I can't imagine insurance settling in favor of the car owner if the car owner leaves their car open for the thieves.

However, as the news has reported, there have been many successful car break-ins in groups of streets at a time.  What does not get reported on the news are instances successful break-ins of a small handful of cars in maybe a 6 block radius.

There are many instances that go un-reported.

And there apparently a large number of unsuccessful break-ins -- because people have locked their cars.  Surely EVERYONE here has seen the video aired on Channel 6 and one of the other TV channels of the guy trying to get into cars on Patton Drive.  One resident had a camera on and sent the film to the news.  Channel 6 was criticized for blurring out the thief's face.

Rotterdam really attracts criminals

Take precautions
