Six Schenectady parks to get city-funded overhauls

By Haley Viccaro  July 29, 2015

Marion Porterfield, Vince Riggi and Scott Asmus volunteer to clean up Jerry Burrell Park on Hamilton Street as part of Earth Day activities in April 2014.

SCHENECTADY — Six city parks will get an upgrade as part of the Recreation Advisory Commission’s plan to rehabilitate parks using city money.

The 12-member commission decided to distribute $250,000 in capital funding among Jerry Burrell Park, Quackenbush Park, Woodlawn Park, Hillhurst Park, Riverside Park and Steinmetz Park.

“We tried to hit all areas of the city,” said Richard Patierne, chairman of the commission. “We doled out the money as evenly as we possibly can. We’re looking at it from a priority standpoint and which parks need it the most.”

At a glance

The following work is planned for these Schenectady parks with $250,000 to be provided by the city:

Jerry Burrell Park

•  Circus wagon needs to be repaired, set in concrete

•  T-swing needs to be refurbished

•  Spider web climber needs to be repainted

•  Carpet needs to be placed in park

Quackenbush Park

•  Swing seats need to be replaced

•  Benches need to be replaced

•  Replace fence along Education Drive

•  Replace merry-go-round

•  Paint basketball hoops and poles, add nets

•  Clean up trash

Woodlawn Park

•  Remove jungle gym

•  Remove four-way seesaw

•  Add toddler equipment

•  Create standardized signage

•  Need carpet, mulch in playground area

Hillhurst Park

•  Add more playground equipment

•  Add bicycle racks

•  Fix pool cement

•  Fix or remove seesaw

•  Fix water fountain

•  Repurpose tennis courts

Riverside Park

•  Remove or retighten Clifford spring ride

•  Remove or repair fencing by swings

•  Repair or repurpose tennis courts

•  Resurface basketball court, repaint lines

•  Add more signage

•  Replace missing swings

Steinmetz Park

•  Pull out sandbox

•  Add new grills

•  Mark trails

•  Add soft ground carpet

•  Add motion-sensor lights

•  Repair basketball court

• Remove seesaw

The commission previously visited all 24 city parks and took note of improvements that need to be made. The six parks chosen earlier this month need the most attention, Patierne said.
