That wouldn't change if they put in a shop rite. They're not even open past 6pm on Sunday's.
I go to Walmart in Niskayuna when I need to shop at night.
I will not go to Price Chopper unless they stop pricing games and charge everyone the same price.
I gave them another chance recently and went to PC late at night, I picked up several items that said on sale with the advantage card. One item was all natural organic macaroni and cheese that sells regular for $2.69 but was offered at 4 for $5. So I grabbed 8 of them. And of course when they rang me up and scanned the store card they gave me only a $1.50 discount on my entire purchase of over $40. I looked at the receipt and they never gave me the sale price for the macaroni and cheese. I said you overcharged me, you should have charged me $10 for 8 macaroni and cheese, but you charged me $21.52 right on the receipt. I said give me my $11.52. Sadie's replacement didn't know how to enter the refund, so after 10 minutes I said it's simple math, you owe me $11.52 so give me my money back. She said she was working on it and she opened the drawer several times in the process. I said just give me my money. She insisted that she couldn't until she got it entered into the computer. I then said, here, I will make it easy for you, give me my money right now or take the entire order back and give me a full refund. She still insisted that I had to wait. I said forget it, I've been waiting over 15 minutes, I demand a full refund right now. She then opened the drawer and counted out $11.52 and handed it to me. I told her that this is exactly why I don't come to this store, because you always try to scam me and I left.
This happened to me several times in the past and that's why I avoid the place whenever I can. Their registers don't display the sale prices ever. You have to wait for the receipt to see if your purchases were rung up correctly.
This is what they call accidental overcharging, but it is systematic and happens every day.
I do almost all shopping at night. I prefer Hannaford, but I'm not willing to drive to Wolf Road to the all night Hannaford.
Hell no - we don't want an "equivalent" of Sears in the mall. Sears is a stodgy, outdated establishment that sucks so bad that even the elderly shoppers won't go there. We want 21st Century retail businesses and other establishments that actually draw people and their spending $$$. As for the Aquarium -- the whole point is to draw people from ALL OVER ... make the mall a DESTINATION .. also retail today is all about THE EXPERIENCE. Mall owners can't afford to just be worried about not upsetting the shopping habits of some locals who haven't had a new thought or changed their shopping habits in 30 or more years. Mall owners have to "move" their properties to where the money is TODAY .. where the shoppers with the money are TODAY .. and draw from as large a pool as possible. That is why I think that retailers like a Bass Pro Shop would be a great fit. Shop Rite would be a great fit because it would definitely draw folks from the Junction and points west of here. A supermarket like that would draw steady daily customers. The destination stores like Bass Pro Shop would draw customers from far and wide. A hotel in or near the mall property would be great, too.
And where are people in Schenectady suppose to get actual retail items? There is nothing if actual worth being offered to anyone who lives here. Fine, draw people in from all over, but if there is nothing of worth to keep anyone here what is the point? What about the peopl who live in the community!?!

JUST BECAUSE SISSY SAYS SO DOESN'T MAKE IT SO...BUT HE THINKS IT DOES!!!!! JUST BECAUSE MC1 SAYS SO DOESN'T MAKE IT SO!!!!!

The Walmart in Nisky is not a bad little store. I wanted to be all superior and hate it, but I just can't. It's really the size that I personally like and has just about everything that I need, when I need it, and at a reasonable price.
I avoid Price Chooper as often as I can. Went this weekend to pick up a few items. I needed some deli meat and Hannaford's deli counter is soooo slow on the weekends (what happened to the Russian girl, she was fast). I ended up spending almost the same as a regular grocery trip just picking up a handful of items.
All the stores in the Sears wing from the Childrens Theater to the Olympic Shoe store have been gutted. Everything from the floor to the roof deck has been removed including all the walls that separated each store. It's nice to see some sort of progress being made there.
Now we need to see some progress at the corner of Curry and Guilderland and the old Kmart plaza.
Re: Price Chopper, I haven't set foot in one in 20 years. If I needed something, and the choices were PC or a store 20 miles away, I'd drive the 20 miles rather than set foot in one.

It doesn't matter if there are 3 grocery stores or 10 in Rotterdam.
They are all on the eastern side of 5 corners! A grocery store at the Mall location would serve the Western side of town, the Junction, and parts of Mariaville and Princetown.
we can 'want and wish' all we want. but only a business that does their homework on whether a location is profitable or not....ROTTENdam will get what they get. businesses market the area to see how much disposable cash is in the area. Macy's left because it was a low volume store. Kmart and sears will follow suit eventually if things don't pick up. Burlington coat was looking at the macy's location. nothing so far. as far as the west end having to go to the east end....how many miles is that......FOUR -SIX????? are folks that lazy now??? the west end better be careful what they wish for!!!

Its not the distance that is the problem. Its the time spent waiting in traffic getting there.
you're kidding right? unless you're driving central ave to get to wolf road to 'grocery shop'.....
again....the west end better be careful what they wish for.
not to mention ALL grocery stores deliver now!!!!!
how lazy has this society gotten??? OMG!

Lazy because I'd like a more convenient grocery store that doesn't require a half hour in the car??
We better be careful what we wish for! Could you imagine how crappy our west side neighborhoods would be if there was a ShopRite located in the currently empty mall?? I bet all the rifraff from the Junction will come and buy up all of our cold cuts!! OMG!!!
You mention Sears, Parent. I've known several well-dressed individuals who went to Sears first for their clothes, and they weren't ashamed to say so. Unfortunately, the Rotterdam sears always had a lesser selection, and since the recession or whatever it was I think that Sears has kind of downgraded itself. So have many other stores, though.
Just responding to several posts - clarifying and correcting things posted:
#1) Shop Rite in Niskayuna is open 6 A.M. to midnight Monday through Saturday and 6 A.M. to 10 P.M. on Sunday. So I don't see how driving to Colonie is more convenient or necessary for anyone -- unless you can only shop between Midnight and 6 A.M.
#2) Macy's closed because of its own problems -- there is no reason why a department store in Rotterdam Square Mall can't be a money maker. Filene's (at least during the time that I worked there) was not only one of the top most profitable per square foot stores within the Filene's division but also was in the top 5 of ALL May Company's stores across the country for a few of those years -- and TWO YEARS was the most profitable May Company store in the entire country. The Rotterdam Filene's whipped the Crossgate's Mall Filene's butt year after year. The department that I ran regularly beat the Crossgate's Filene's in total $, profitability and lowest shrinkage. The fact is that Macy's kept the Rotterdam Square Mall store open just about 7 years -- enough to write off on taxes the cost of purchasing it. They never had any intention of actually investing the money or the effort to make it a profitable store like it could have been.
#3) Sears and KMarts will close eventually - because their parent company is a mess, their retail business model is outdated and the parent company is looking to move all of its resources into its non-retail businesses. I'd rather see those 2 stores close sooner rather than later -- so that we can get better, more attractive, more profitable stores in the space that they occupy.
#4) There are many, many people in the west part of Rotterdam, Rotterdam Junction, west end of the county and beyond that seriously want a supermarket -- and Shop Rite would be a great choice to put there. It would be very profitable.
#5) Due to our proximity to the interstates, the Adirondacks and the Catskills as well as the large pool of local hunters. fishermen/women and outdoors-men/women , the mall would be a great location for a Bass Pro Shop.
#6) The aquarium and fun zone have already gotten all the approvals -- the plans look great -- they should be open in a couple to 3 months.

The only question that the new mall owners didn't answer was whether fish would be on the menu at the cafe which will be located in the new aquarium.

still say....the best place for development is rt 7/I88 in ROTTERNdam.

It would be IF there were public sewers. I know for a FACT that several major companies were interested in developing properties in the Route 7-I-188 corridor but walked away when they learned that there were no sewers. We need public sewers on hamburg Street. We need public sewers along Route 158 to the county line.
