Funny you should mention St Patty's day and the Irish... The reason the Irish are often red haired and fair skin, is Viking blood. On the many conquests of the British Isles, Vikings sometimes stayed in Ireland passing on their Viking traits.

Actually, the Vikings stayed in a number of places that they "visited" and most of the royal dynasties of Europe have Viking blood in them. The Viking blood brings out the best in Europe's leaders. It is only the more mundane "local blood" in their family blood lines (English, Irish, French, Russian, etc.) that weakens Europe's noble/ruling class and make them so ineffective as leaders.

Vikings is a very well written show. It would be much better if it were on HBO or Starz where it could be fully exploited to it's maximum extent.
