Rand Paul, like his father is nothing short of a progressive. they both say 'just enough' to make them sound 'libertarian'....but they are progressives at their core.
They are both individualists that say "just enough" to sound like collectivist. The conservative vs liberal political spectrum are both collectivist philosophies. That's why both Republicans and Democrats attack them. The idea of the individual is not permitted in American politics.

Progressives don't like individualists. They hate private property rights. They prefer a powerful state to enforce their beliefs onto everybody. The progressives never argued to get the state out of marriage, they wanted the all powerful state to define who is permitted to marry.
There are most definitely absolutes with progressives and conservatives. Every social policy is absolutely enforced at the barrel of a gun. And they both believe all absolutes are determined by government and never left up to the individual. The next absolute determined by government will be Christian churches cannot incite hatred toward homosexuals from the pulpit.

Anyone can marry. You just need a contract between two people. If you want to be recognized as a "married couple" by the state, (like Cicero does), then you must meet the requirements of the STATE to get those benefits from the STATE. No one is forcing Cicero to claim "married" on his income tax. He could always file "single" and so could his spouse.

Don't know, probably a lot. $17 trillion in national debt and counting. Not including the $200 trillion in unfunded liabilities. My kids will walk into probably about $30 trillion worth of federal "entitlements" before casting a vote. I'll be sure to tell them to vote and vote often.
